IN PHOTOS: WELCOME TO THE MUCH-IMPROVED AIRPORT OF DUMAGUETE!
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, together with Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade, led the inaugural ceremony and unveiling of the marker of the development projects at Dumaguete (Sibulan) Airport today, 11 March 2021.
In his keynote address, President Duterte commended Secretary Tugade, the DOTr, and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) for realizing the much-needed improvement and rehabilitation at the airport, in spite of the unprecedented challenges brought about by the current pandemic.
“I commend the DOTr, the CAAP, and all our partners who contributed to the completion of the project despite the sudden lockdown due to the pandemic. I hope that this project will inspire and provide better services and opportunities for our people and harness the potential of trade and tourism as a catalyst for economic recovery particularly in the provinces,” President Duterte expressed.
He also assured the Filipino people that the government is fully committed to complete all the much-needed projects of the country on-time and in a fast pace, without compromising the convenience of the public, and ensuring integrity and honesty.
“I assure our people that we remain committed to finish all infra projects on time and fast. within my admin, with the least inconvenience to the public, and with strict adherence to honesty and integrity. Corruption has no place here,” President Duterte emphasized.
Also during the event, CAAP Director General Jim Sydiongco said that the airport has been capable of accommodating night-time flights. He also announced that a new airport is about to rise in the coming years, to further boost economic growth, tourism, and trade in the province.
“Under Duterte administration Dumaguete airport also became capable of accommodating night time flights. In the coming years, to support Negros Oriental growth in air traffic, tourism, and trade, the new Dumaguete Airport would be constructed in Bacong, Negros Oriental,” DG Sydiongco said.
DG Sydiongco further added, “The Department of Transportation and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines collaborated in the comprehensive transformation of the airport as heralds of the massive “BUILD, BUILD, BUILD” Infrastructure Program of the Duterte Administration. Now and more than ever, the traveling public of this great and beautiful province would enjoy a more convenient and safe airport.”
The development projects at the airport include the re-blocking of the apron, construction of two (2) taxiways, expansion of the existing Passenger Terminal Building (PTB), runway asphalt overlay and shoulder grade correction, and the expansion of the Administrative Building of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
With the development projects at the airport—which mainly serves the province of Negros
Oriental and neighbouring Siquijor Island—upgrade on the airport’s capability to land heavier aircrafts can now be seen, and the passenger capacity of the PTB increases from 330 to 450, following the expansion of the building.
Several distinguished government officials, who joined the President and the transportation chief in the event are Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, and Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar.
Other officials who were also in attendance are Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, DOTr Chief of Staff and Assistant Secretary for Procurement and Project Implementation Giovanni Lopez, PAL Inc. President and COO Gilbert Sta Maria, and PAL Express President and COO Bonifacio Sam.
