Bwahaha. I guess most of us look forward to "pahubag tiyan" when we attend seminars. While sometimes we may genuinely want to learn and share our expertise, only the wettest of wet blankets would not want to have a good time. Often, food is the common object of desire. (Sex is only for those who are overly adventuous or insecure of their achievements--unless, of course, events conspire against one's vow of temporary chasity. [Sorry, diay, Fr. Chic. Wa kay apil ani nga obiter dictum, bwahaha!])

It would appear that a considerable part of the brouhaha was a matter of quantity ("one kusnit") and presentation (giputos rag bulsita). Dili tingali moreklamo si Bay Koddi kon one whole pa ang fried bangus, with thick tambok tiyan and crispy panit, complete with spicy tuslobanan...

Anyhow, if I were a participant I would consider it worth my while, if only to learn the truth about the famous snapshot of the Leyte landing. For one, it would provide me with a more enlightened perspective in evaluating photographs, such as the one which TB members discussed a few months back--that famous picture of a bright-eyed (and perhaps also bushy-tailed) piggybacking general. ;D

Sex is only for those who are overly adventuous or insecure of their achievements...

Leave it at that!

If were a participant I would consider it worth my while, if only to learn the truth about the famous snapshot of the Leyte landing.

Everything should be worth our while when placed before us; must have a reason we may or may never not know but all part of the bigger scheme of things. The "not yet" hasn't been revealed yet, it is said. But I read a joke once which says "They will in a minute!"  ;D

I'm talking about this joke...

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.

The girl replied, 'I'm drawing God.'

The teacher paused and said, 'But no one knows what God looks like.'

Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, 'They will in a minute.'  ;D ;D ;D

aw diha man diay kuno tour on the third day....

Basin kadto ra jod tinuod kaon gibagutbotan... nahilom na pag laag. Bohol sights and history should be a calming and "silencing" experience... labi nag makakita sila sa ilang true heritage sa Loboc - kadtong mga maomag con tarsiers. Samot nag gipakapinag Balicasag. Pero wa na siguro kay one day is not enough for historians who love "quality" tour more than the usual Boholano idea of tour, just a quick sight-seeing and no real explanations of things. Still so much to be desired on that area. Kuwang pa jud!  ;D

kana gud imu gisuwat sa taas, bay.

i'll explain it by way of example na lang.

1) a tourist would be contented to see the magnificent chocolate hills, pose for some pics and cool off at the restaurant.

on the other hand, the traveller will take time to read the marker on how the chocolate hills were formed.

2) a tourist would be contented to give sikatuna and legazpi a toast for a picture.

on the other hand, the traveller will take his time to research and inquire on the event, the personalities involved and the significance of the treaty in philippine history.

Salamat Calle. Pero dugang pa ani: matud pa sa akong classmate nga graduate sa Leuven, Belgium, mao nay iyang namatikdan nga ang mga Pinoy (or Asians mostly) - dili tanan but kasagaran - are a sight-seeing culture, the Europeans a reading culture (kusog motagad and willing kung istoryahon, pero kung wa gani ka istorya, will take a pocket book out of their backpack or purse and read). Kita daw, bahalag di kasud sa museum or a library, basta lang naay picture sa maong famous building unya apil tas picture, bastante na, kay naa namay ebidensya nga naka anha na ta anang lugara. Morag mga Hapon hehehe! North Americans are close to the European counterparts, they want to know more about the history of such a place and will love to spend longer and quality time on a particular place while also enjoying the sights and trying out the food that's available. But I also noticed how often they (Americans) complain about the price of souvenirs and food. I guess, because it's a lot cheaper for them when they buy them in their own country, while in other places, they try to compete with the world's standard and so appear to be really expensive. Wrong expectation 'ika nga.

But the irony is , they, too, call themselves, or, are still considered tourists. Travelers, on the other hand, for me, are those who love to go camping, hiking, white water rafting, mountain climbing, motor-biking, cruise, spend weeks or months out-of-town driving their RVs, etc. They don't necessarily read or know in-depth the history of a particular spot they visit but they are really traveling!!! And they hardly call themselves tourists.

Consider this morsel of elegant prose: "one side of a fried bangus' head, cut to the puuk kaayo, with only one kusnit left sa tangkugo nga bahin."  What an eye for details! Ka-imagine ko sa one kusnit nga unod! (Bay Koddi, tinuod jud diay nga hunger is a good source of inspiration, bwahaha.) ;D

Of course, of course. Especially nga hapit na ala una gi-serve and food. Wala pa gani nako gi mention nga used oil ang gigamit kay mailhan man sa baho sa piniritong isda. Sigi gud ta sa kusina. Hangtud karon, vivid pa gihapon nako ang food, este "non-food", he he he.

haahaha, that would be a courageous act on his part. anyhow, in connection to that, bay kods, i heard an anecdote on that fateful landing at Leyte years ago.

While General Douglas MacArthur was wading through the water, he noticed there was a military helmet appearing on the surface. When the MacArthur attempted to recover it, he saw it was Carlos P Romulo wading the water below .  ;D ;D ;D

A small person but with great achievements. An unforgettable anecdote;

n his career in the United Nations, Rómulo was a strong advocate of human rights, freedom and decolonization. During the selection of the UN's official seal, he looked over the seal-to-be and asked, "Where is the Philippines?" US Senator Warren Austin, head of the selection committee, explained, "It's too small to include. If we put the Philippines, it would be no more than a dot." "I want that dot!" insisted Romulo. Today, a tiny dot between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea can be found on the UN seal. In 1948 in Paris, France, at the third UN General Assembly, he strongly disagreed with a proposal made by the Soviet delegation headed by Andrei Vishinsky, who challenged his credentials by insulting him with this quote: "You are just a little man from a little country." In return, Romulo replied, "It is the duty of the little Davids of this world to fling the pebbles of truth in the eyes of the blustering Goliaths and force them to behave!", leaving Vishinsky with nothing left to do but sit down. Once, later in his life when he was with MacArthur and other tall American generals who disparaged his physical stature, he retorted, "Gentlemen, when you say something like that, you make me feel like a dime among nickels."

His shortness was legendary. When he addressed the UN as the first Asian president of the General Assembly, he had to stand on top of four thick New York telephone directories so that his face could be seen above the rostrum.

His shortness was legendary. When he addressed the UN as the first Asian president of the General Assembly, he had to stand on top of four thick New York telephone directories so that his face could be seen above the rostrum.

There's a classic CPR photo taken from behind while he was addressing a crowd.  He was satnding on a cushion or throwpillow.

By the way, ever wonder why some Cabinet members look tall while addressing on a rostrum/podium? Because the platform has been custom-made for you-know-who.

another story about the grand old man went like this:

he was walking in a US park when an American greeted him with "Good morning, monkey!" to which he replied, "Good morning, brother!"

I attended the gathering and I am sure that I belonged to the 3 percent who rated the conference as "Good". Maybe I am deviant because I am part of the minority group. I will just share my experience and I hope of this said "controversy".

I will just highlights the major points raised by some followers of this forum.

1. The working committees especially the registration was was handled by the Board of Directors of the PNHS and not the local convener. There were participants almost 50 participants who did not receive the kit because there were many participants who did not inform the PNHS of their attendance. But the President of PNHS promised to send the kit.

2. The host school was only requested by the PNHS of a venue. The AV Hall looked like a refugee center. I heard that there was a move by the host school to transfer the venue but the PNHS declined. However, I can attest that even on the second day, the AV Hall was still full of eager participants. So it is not true that many participants left on the first day. By the way, the hall was really air-conditioned and its functional. WOW!

3. I can attest that the food served was really a disaster especially on the second day.But Common sense tells me not to blame the host school because the PNHS hired a caterer. Of course I expected much of the snacks. But the " piniritong saging and bingka" were good enough for me. At least may kinain pa di tulad ng iba na kahit lugaw wala.

4. I believed that as History teacher what really matters most were the topics presented. Dami kong na learn. If my colleagues were not satisfied of the food and accommodation, then they should come back and be billeted in expensive hotels so that they will experience the royal treatment. Nkalibre na nga kami ng 2 delicious suppers in Meridian and in Dauis.

Thanks Junjun, for weighing in with your personal experience as a participant.

This furor reminds me that history is really far from being a one-dimensional affair. History is always viewed from a particular perspective--and one event can mean differently depending on where you look at it from. Who was it who said, where you stand on a matter depends on where you sit?

5. Finally, this is a learning lesson for any institution that will handle hosting of seminars. Dapat may Memorandum of Agreement talaga para alam ng mga participants kung sino and dapat iblame! I don't agree with some remarks na "kahihiyan ng Bohol" ang nangyari. There are lots of beautiful things that Bohol can offer. I'd say that the auditory feast offered by the LCC was more than compensation enough for the reported gustatory letdown.

Welcome to TB, Bay Jun.
