Naa gani magbagotbot maski EB ra, di pajod ila gasto hehehe. Unsa na kaha kung mobayad ug P3K maski ge sponsoran pa sa ilang school or department? It's hard to please jud everyone. I'm wondering - just wondering - diha ba kaha poy wa mag bagotbot, kadtong nakaingon ug "Ok lang at least nakakita kog Bohol ug naka break from my day job..." or kadtong "humble enough" to "not forget" where they came from, panahon sa kawad-on sa mga estudyante pa sila? Just a thought that inspired me from another thread ("Student Prosti-Tuition")  ;D Buluyagon jud bay HB no?

Bitaw, mutualism man tingali ang dominant interactive principle diri.

Mutualism and reciprocity--and there's no worthier poster boy for this in TB than you, Bay Hubs. Murag interesting bitaw ang topics sa conference, nahawongan lang sa problema sa logistics. Kinahanglan lang pud pasidaan ni Sir Harv nga whatever topic you post here, at some point in time mosimang gyud ang kukabildo into the common basic interests of green (as in sex) and yummy (as in food)... But they're what keep us glued to the topic.

To paraphrase Terence, "I'm a monster, and everything monstrous is of interest to me." Bitaw, maybe while we're feeding our morbid curiousities on the fiasco aspect of this confab, we might at the same time also check what it was all about. I'm sure it's neither irrelevant nor too academic for our purposes. After all, we're part of the subject matter, and as far as I can see we are all enrolled in the School of Hard Knocks, with some of us pursuing postgraduate studies. ;D

The Conference theme is Towards a National History: Local History in the context of National History which has all these years been the thrust of PNHS Conferences. The objective of the conference is to look at the research and writing on the Visayas as well as other regions in the archipelago and to situate these studies in the context of national history.

An important lesson of hindsight is that what may seem trivial, random or local in the present may in fact be a critical turning point in our bigger history.

Who would ever think that the seemingly casual warming up of Bool's Datu Sikatuna and Loboc's Datu Sigala to Legazpi's quavery overtures would subsequently lead to Spain's subjugation of the entire archipelago?

In the same way, this sputtering outburst of our disgruntled guests may teach Bohol an important lesson in our quest to be a world-class tourist destination and convention venue.

Glace... makalingaw diay gyod pag-ayo. I liked the movie a lot.

i'm glad you enjoyed it, pads, ug wa mahimong fiasco ang imong pagtan-aw sa sine.  ;D

Like you said, pads, where are those other participants who found the conference worthwhile, despite the unsavory diet, as reported? it is worth listening their side of the story, i believe.

Some of the topics that I can remember (titles are not in toto):

1.  Gaam, the last king of Agbonan (now San Isidro, Bohol)
2.  Pres. Sergio Osmeña in Leyte
3.  The civilians of Leyte during the Japanese Occupation (Trivia: the official Leyte Landing photo was reportedly a retake kay nabasa man kuno si Douglas sa unang pagnaog kay na miscalculate sa officer who had charge of ensuring the water level was ok.)
4.  Writing history using photographs as clues
5.  Layouting a hills station: the case of Baguio
6.  Peopling of the Danajon Double Barrier Reef (Bohol)
7.  The Mindanao I Never Saw (research on Mindanao as reported by Cebu-based newspapers)
8.  One report from a Muslim historian

There were at least three papers read before and after every snacktime. This means at least 12 papers were read in a day.

True, duha ka maruyang saging gisulod sa paper bulsita. Nagmantika jud kay absorbent man ang papel. Diha poy usa ka snackan nga bingka ug tulo ka baked polvoron, morag holen. Ad libitum hinoon ang kape.

If there's anyone here who knows the answer, nobody would have asked the question or questions. Or presented the issue here. As it is,this is a discussion group made up of people from all over the world who happen to be interested on a particular subject matter. Partly engaging discussions, partly exercising the brain, or, beat homesickness and what-have-you. Hehehe

Lunch last Friday (October 23, 2009): chopsuey nga five thin slices of sayote and one thin slice of carrot and one kutsarita of sabaw, no meat; three very very small chops of fried chicken, pwede kas-a ra ihungit; one side of a fried bangus' head, cut to the puuk kaayo, with only one kusnit left sa tangkugo nga bahin; and macaroni nga uga; tetrapack juice nga walay straw, ako pay nangita, ug way nakit-an so wala mainom.

Well, however the confab will be remembered, only time will tell. If history is written by the victors, I hope in this case they will have Bay Koddi's power of description, as exemplified by the excerpt quoted above.

Consider this morsel of elegant prose: "one side of a fried bangus' head, cut to the puuk kaayo, with only one kusnit left sa tangkugo nga bahin." What an eye for details! Ka-imagine ko sa one kusnit nga unod!

(Bay Koddi, tinuod jud diay nga hunger is a good source of inspiration, bwahaha.)

Bwahahaha!!!

Kung ingkaso maglisod ang Department of Education ug sweldo sa mga history teachers, tsk tsk tsk, I wonder what they gonna do. Kay di mani sila pwedeng mag hunger strike ehehehe. They want (and demand) to be "uninspired" (according to Hubs): to stay BUSOG bah! Hubs, mao nay giingog PAHUBAG tiyan!!! Kung e rambol PABAHUG!!! (Bol-anon siguro kagikan ani nila kay hilig BAHOG, sama ni HUBS. ;D

Bwahaha. I guess most of us look forward to "pahubag tiyan" when we attend seminars. While sometimes we may genuinely want to learn and share our expertise, only the wettest of wet blankets would not want to have a good time. Often, food is the common object of desire. (Sex is only for those who are overly adventuous or insecure of their achievements--unless, of course, events conspire against one's vow of temporary chasity. [Sorry, diay, Fr. Chic. Wa kay apil ani nga obiter dictum, bwahaha!])

It would appear that a considerable part of the brouhaha was a matter of quantity ("one kusnit") and presentation (giputos rag bulsita). Dili tingali moreklamo si Bay Koddi kon one whole pa ang fried bangus, with thick tambok tiyan and crispy panit, complete with spicy tuslobanan...

Anyhow, if I were a participant I would consider it worth my while, if only to learn the truth about the famous snapshot of the Leyte landing. For one, it would provide me with a more enlightened perspective in evaluating photographs, such as the one which TB members discussed a few months back--that famous picture of a bright-eyed (and perhaps also bushy-tailed) piggybacking general. ;D

Sex is only for those who are overly adventuous or insecure of their achievements...

Leave it at that!

If were a participant I would consider it worth my while, if only to learn the truth about the famous snapshot of the Leyte landing.

Everything should be worth our while when placed before us; must have a reason we may or may never not know but all part of the bigger scheme of things. The "not yet" hasn't been revealed yet, it is said. But I read a joke once which says "They will in a minute!"  ;D

I'm talking about this joke...

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.

The girl replied, 'I'm drawing God.'

The teacher paused and said, 'But no one knows what God looks like.'

Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, 'They will in a minute.'  ;D ;D ;D

aw diha man diay kuno tour on the third day....

Basin kadto ra jod tinuod kaon gibagutbotan... nahilom na pag laag. Bohol sights and history should be a calming and "silencing" experience... labi nag makakita sila sa ilang true heritage sa Loboc - kadtong mga maomag con tarsiers. Samot nag gipakapinag Balicasag. Pero wa na siguro kay one day is not enough for historians who love "quality" tour more than the usual Boholano idea of tour, just a quick sight-seeing and no real explanations of things. Still so much to be desired on that area. Kuwang pa jud!  ;D

kana gud imu gisuwat sa taas, bay.

i'll explain it by way of example na lang.

1) a tourist would be contented to see the magnificent chocolate hills, pose for some pics and cool off at the restaurant.

on the other hand, the traveller will take time to read the marker on how the chocolate hills were formed.

2) a tourist would be contented to give sikatuna and legazpi a toast for a picture.

on the other hand, the traveller will take his time to research and inquire on the event, the personalities involved and the significance of the treaty in philippine history.

Salamat Calle. Pero dugang pa ani: matud pa sa akong classmate nga graduate sa Leuven, Belgium, mao nay iyang namatikdan nga ang mga Pinoy (or Asians mostly) - dili tanan but kasagaran - are a sight-seeing culture, the Europeans a reading culture (kusog motagad and willing kung istoryahon, pero kung wa gani ka istorya, will take a pocket book out of their backpack or purse and read). Kita daw, bahalag di kasud sa museum or a library, basta lang naay picture sa maong famous building unya apil tas picture, bastante na, kay naa namay ebidensya nga naka anha na ta anang lugara. Morag mga Hapon hehehe! North Americans are close to the European counterparts, they want to know more about the history of such a place and will love to spend longer and quality time on a particular place while also enjoying the sights and trying out the food that's available. But I also noticed how often they (Americans) complain about the price of souvenirs and food. I guess, because it's a lot cheaper for them when they buy them in their own country, while in other places, they try to compete with the world's standard and so appear to be really expensive. Wrong expectation 'ika nga.

But the irony is , they, too, call themselves, or, are still considered tourists. Travelers, on the other hand, for me, are those who love to go camping, hiking, white water rafting, mountain climbing, motor-biking, cruise, spend weeks or months out-of-town driving their RVs, etc. They don't necessarily read or know in-depth the history of a particular spot they visit but they are really traveling!!! And they hardly call themselves tourists.

Consider this morsel of elegant prose: "one side of a fried bangus' head, cut to the puuk kaayo, with only one kusnit left sa tangkugo nga bahin." What an eye for details! Ka-imagine ko sa one kusnit nga unod! (Bay Koddi, tinuod jud diay nga hunger is a good source of inspiration, bwahaha.) ;D

Of course, of course. Especially nga hapit na ala una gi-serve and food. Wala pa gani nako gi mention nga used oil ang gigamit kay mailhan man sa baho sa piniritong isda. Sigi gud ta sa kusina. Hangtud karon, vivid pa gihapon nako ang food, este "non-food", he he he.

Anyhow, if I were a participant I would consider it worth my while, if only to learn the truth about the famous snapshot of the Leyte landing. ;D

. . . or ask: "Did Carlos P. Romulo disembark at that water level?"

haahaha, that would be a courageous act on his part. anyhow, in connection to that, bay kods, i heard an anecdote on that fateful landing at Leyte years ago.

While General Douglas MacArthur was wading through the water, he noticed there was a military helmet appearing on the surface. When the MacArthur attempted to recover it, he saw it was Carlos P Romulo wading the water below .  ;D ;D ;D

A small person but with great achievements. An unforgettable anecdote;

n his career in the United Nations, Rómulo was a strong advocate of human rights, freedom and decolonization. During the selection of the UN's official seal, he looked over the seal-to-be and asked, "Where is the Philippines?" US Senator Warren Austin, head of the selection committee, explained, "It's too small to include. If we put the Philippines, it would be no more than a dot." "I want that dot!" insisted Romulo. Today, a tiny dot between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea can be found on the UN seal. In 1948 in Paris, France, at the third UN General Assembly, he strongly disagreed with a proposal made by the Soviet delegation headed by Andrei Vishinsky, who challenged his credentials by insulting him with this quote: "You are just a little man from a little country." In return, Romulo replied, "It is the duty of the little Davids of this world to fling the pebbles of truth in the eyes of the blustering Goliaths and force them to behave!", leaving Vishinsky with nothing left to do but sit down. Once, later in his life when he was with MacArthur and other tall American generals who disparaged his physical stature, he retorted, "Gentlemen, when you say something like that, you make me feel like a dime among nickels."

His shortness was legendary. When he addressed the UN as the first Asian president of the General Assembly, he had to stand on top of four thick New York telephone directories so that his face could be seen above the rostrum.
