High-ranking Bol-anon NPA Leader Arrested in Oriental Negros
« on: August 02, 2008, 04:03:43 AM »
By Rey Anthony Chiu

Negros Oriental police nabbed a Boholano believed to be a ranking Central Visayas leader of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) and his girlfriend as they disembarked from at the port in Sibulan Negros Oriental, Saturday, July 26, reports said.

Negros Oriental PNP Assistant Provincial Director Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas identified the suspects as Pedro Banga Lumantas, alias Ading / Lukring/ Mumer, 44, of Magsaysay, Sevilla town in Bohol; and Lita Pador Mahilum, alias Joy/Belen, 41, of Labangon, Cebu City.

The arrest was by virtue of a warrant for 4 counts of murder against Lumantas and issued by Judge Sylvia Aguirre-Paderaga of Danao City Regional Trial Court Branch 25.

Subsequent body search of the suspects yielded 2 hand grenades, personal belongings and documents, one of which was a letter to another Boholano red fighter who was asked to lie low due to a kidney problem.

Military sources bared that Lumantas was identified in a few anti-government sorties in Bohol including the ambushes of army’s 2nd Lt. Socrates Que in March of 2000 in Sagbayan and 1Lt.Ronnie Bungaos in March of 2003.

Insider information from the Negros-based 302nd Brigade also revealed that, Lumantas was a squad leader of an NPA platoon and rose to become a political officer of the Bohol Island Committee of the NPA before they moved their base to Negros where he assumed the Finance, Logistics and Communications Officer of the Komite Rehiyon Sentral Bisayas or KRSB of the CPP-NPA.

Charges have been filed against the two who are now detained at an unspecified location in Negros.

Mahilum meanwhile was allegedly a former NPA member in Cebu who operated in Bohol and later worked as baby-sitter in Cebu.

The military intelligence sources also revealed that she now works as a rebel courier and liaison, handling important documents.

Lumantas and Mahilum both denied the accusations.

On related development, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo called a permanent stop to all criminal activities of the Communist rebels if we want to catapult the Philippines to a modernized country by 2020.

“For years,” the President said, “the Communist rebels have been a low-level threat, and it is time for their disruption and violation of human rights to be put to rest so that the nation can move ahead.”

“But to the rebels who genuinely and sincerely speak peace, we shall respond in kind. The most important part of our counter-strategy is the soft power of economic progress, dialogue and continuing efforts to arrive at mutual understanding,” the President said.

Arguments over grammar and style are often as fierce as those over IBM versus Mac, and as fruitless as Coke versus Pepsi and boxers versus briefs.
