‘Mummified’ baby found in BoholBy Ma. Rosanna Mina, abs-cbnNEWS.com | 08/26/2009 3:54 PM
MANILA – A preserved corpse of a baby girl has reportedly been unearthed in the municipality of Mabini in Bohol.
Such discovery sparked widespread interest among residents of Brgy. San Roque (Cabulao) in Mabini.
Curious residents have been trooping to the St. Michael Cemetery to catch a glimpse of the “mummified†baby.
A mummy is a corpse treated for burial with preservatives in the process done by ancient Egyptians.
It could also be a body that is unusually well preserved possibly through incidental exposure to chemicals, very low humidity and extreme coldness.
A body could also be preserved if there is a lack of air when it is submerged in a bog or a wet ground with soil.
Dug up
The baby girl’s corpse, which was accidentally dug up by a gravedigger about a week ago, is in a casket with a glass cover.
“Di nag-decompose,†was how people described the corpse, according to Councilor Vicente Gulle. It has been almost a year, yet the baby has allegedly not decomposed.
“Di maubusan ang tao lalo nung na-discover,†Gulle told abs-cbnNEWS.com over the phone. He added that local newspapers already featured the discovery.
Gulle, who is part of the Mabini Municipal Council, said he has not been to the cemetery because he had work to do.
“Di na masyado marami,†he noted of the people who are presently going to the cemetery.
Faith
Fr. Mario Umbao, meantime, said about 100 people were at the cemetery when he went there Wednesday afternoon.
Umbao is the parish priest of St. Michael Parish in Brgy. San Roque (Cabulao).
He said he was able to speak with the baby’s father, Rico Tuyor. The baby’s mother was not in the cemetery because she had just given birth.
Tuyor always goes to the cemetery because he fears that the body of his baby, Mary Jane, would be stolen. “Baka manakaw,†Umbao said of Tuyor’s fear.
Umbao said Tuyor told him the baby was 1 year and 4 months when she died last September from pneumonia and loose bowel movement (LBM).
He then mentioned that he feels “neutral†about the situation.
However, he disclosed: “I’m afraid the people will lose their faith in God as they are concentrating on the mummified body of the baby.â€
But he cannot help it. “I cannot prevent them from going to the cemetery,†he said.
Miracle?
Veronica Asas, 30, was one of the many who wanted to see if the “mummified†baby is true.
Asas, a housewife, went to the cemetery with her brother because they just live nearby.
The baby’s clothes were said to be rotting but the corpse was still intact and fresh. The baby reportedly had fever before she died.
Asas said the corpse was washed with alcohol because it was muddy when dug up. The baby’s skin color reportedly changed to purple because of that. “Parang nasunog,†she said.
In addition, she said the baby’s eyes were open. But Umbao noted that the baby’s eyes were closed when he went to the cemetery.
“Hindi naman nakakatakot ang mukha,†commented Asas.
She surmised that a lot of people went to the cemetery because they probably believe it was a “milagro†(miracle). “Di nangamoy,†she added.
“Buong-buo,†was what Asas’ brother, Federico Ibañez, Jr., said about the corpse.
Asas and Ibañez said they heard that the baby would have been 1 by September.
Donations
Ibañez, 46, noted that they did not pay any amount to see the corpse, although he mentioned that there was a donation box in the cemetery.
Umbao explained that the curious people would leave money after seeing the corpse. Some would just leave the money around since there was no place for them to put it.
A small box was placed but it could not hold the amount of money the people were donating. A larger box was then placed by Tuyor.
Umbao related that Tuyor also fears that the donation box would be stolen when there are no more people in the cemetery.
According to Umbao, the donation money will be divided between the cemetery and Tuyor.
Gulle, meantime, said he will look into the donation box matter.
Mabini, where Gulle serves as municipal councilor, is located in the eastern part of Bohol. According to the 2000 census, Mabini has 22 barangays, 5047 households and a population of 27,250.
Brgy. San Roque (Cabulao), meantime, has a population of 2391. It also has 451 households.
