The shootings took place at a residence in an upscale Santa Clara neighborhood outside San Francisco late Sunday, reports said.
Santa Clara police lieutenant Phil Cooke told the San Francisco Chronicle police were called to a home at around 8.30 pm (0330 GMT) on Sunday.
"When they got here, they found multiple gunshot victims inside the home," Cooke said. "There are five confirmed deceased inside the home. Two others were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries."
An adult and several children were among the dead, while an infant and adult had been hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police said the suspect was believed to be among the dead.
California has witnessed several murder-suicides involving multiple deaths in recent months.
In January a father apparently upset over the loss of his job shot dead his wife and five children before killing himself in a Los Angeles suburb.
The dead included an eight-year-old girl, five-year-old twin girls and two-year-old twin boys.
In December, a gunman dressed as Santa Claus stormed into the home of his former in-laws on Christmas Eve and opened fire on his ex-wife and her family before setting the house alight.
Nine people were killed in the rampage before the gunman took his own life.
In October, a 45-year-old man shot his wife, three children and mother-in-law before killing himself, reportedly because of financial woes.
