Fil-Am is US Army’s top soldier

MANILA, Philippines—A Filipino-American bested 25 others from different units of the United States Army to win the distinction of being the US Army’s best soldier.
Specialist Heyz Seeker, 35, whose mother hails from Bohol, was named “Soldier of the Year,” according to Army.Mil, the US Army’s official homepage.

To win the award, Seeker, who has visited the Philippines only once in his lifetime, had to compete in a series of mental and physical tests held from Oct. 1 to 5 at Fort Lee in Virginia.

The competition included M-4 rifle qualification, day and night urban warfare, battle drills, a written exam on military topics, an essay, a physical fitness test, battle drills and a mystery event.

Seeker represented the US Army Special Operations Command in the competition. He is currently stationed at Hunger Army Airfield, Georgia, with the 75th Ranger Regiment.

He told the Army website that three tours of duty in Afghanistan and one in Iraq helped him prepare for the competition.

“I love the Army, and I love living a structured life,” he said. “I’m all about paving the way, leading the way and being the first at something. I was the first in my family to be a ranger, and I’d like to one day become the first Filipino sergeant major of the Army.”

Seeker lists his hometown as Grover, California, but his family is now based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Born to Filipino parents in Atascadero, California, Seeker grew up in Grover. His father died when he was 2 years old and his mother remarried when he was 10.

His mother, Maxima Voelker, is from Bohol. Seeker’s first and only trip to the Philippines was when he was 15. He grew up hearing stories of how both his father and stepfather had fought in World War II.

According to a news release from the Army’s Public Affairs Office, Seeker nurtured an interest in cooking. He plans to put up a sushi bar when he retires from the Army.

GMA pulls philippine troops out of the terrorist zone but when the Philippine person is in the American army and wins an award he is just another feather in the cap?

It's a bigger deal then that to receive any award or metals while in the service. He is not the only person whether black, brown or white or what ever flag he hails from  that fights in the service for the rights of all or wins a metal.

I think and feel all service men regardless of their background roots  or if they are proving for a metal or no metal and who also fights wars for our freedom and rights is a hero in my eyes every day of the year.

Military should not be treated as an biased issue as the men who fight are fighting for the best of everyone else.

I helped donate time and materials to build the reservist base here in Bohol as a foreign foundation member did I ask or receive a metal for it? Our pride was good enough for the warm reception we always were given here.

I was also the first foreign (WOMAN) army foundation member to help the military in the foundation here in Bohol.

The point here is many persons do many good things that do not require metals to get the god deed accomplished..

If you need proof my name is is in brass mounted on marble near to the grandstand that the Americans funded as well as other projects of construction in the camp.

No matter what our flag is that we are born under we are all worthy of acomplishing good thigs for all.

Many have also died for our freedom let's not forget them the most.

So what if I recognize the achievement of a soldier?  That's the subject line so I am reacting to a particular achievement of a person but it does not mean I alianate the others who are doing the same.  All soldiers are worthy of respect because they put their lives in harms' way so we may have a peaceful life.  I cry each time I see in the news that a soldier is killed. I pray for their families and the internal repose of the soul of the dead.  Do I also ask for recognition to that?  These men and women are great and they don't cry either to be recognized of what they have done and continue doing!  They are real hero!  And you tell me all military should not be treated as an (should be "a") biased issue?  Of course I know that.  I have no problem at all with any  skin colors.  I don't carry in my heart prejudice and especially ungratefulness especially to people who are doing good not just for my country but to the whole world.

Oh, what about you?  Oh, poor you! You know, Precious, you really made me laugh!  When I was reading your message, I could almost hear a kid throwing a tantrum and kept saying "what about me? what about me? what about me?  I did this, I did that!" I wish you started a thread enumerating your contribution to the whole world and I am sure, people would be proud of you too instead of negating each and every word we say!  You did good job, as you say, but it became clouded because you are so impolite and so rude.  You think you are exercising your freedom of speech but you are just simply rude.

If GMA or other leaders who participated in the Iraq war pull out troops, that's their business.  If these presidents deem it right to end their contribution to fight against terrorism, so be it! If you don't want GMA to pull out the troops, initiate a rally and tell them you don't want GMA to pull the troops! America is also fighting for the pull out of troops!

Lastly, when you do great jobs especially to other people, don't  ask for recognition in return.  People will see your effort and in due time you will be rewarded.  Even if you will not recieve award symbolized by metals, as what you termed, that's alright.  The important thing is that you change for the good the course of life of other people and I hope that's enough reward in your heart.

For whatever it's worth, THANK YOU for your contribution to Bohol and to the Philippines, as a whole.  I mean it.  No sarcasm at all!

Amen to that, Graz.

Here's a good quote to ponder. “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.”

Do a good deed in discreet and god will acknowledge it. Do it in the open and boast everyone what have you done, you won't get anything at all..

Spldier is avery dangerous job... IMO

Anyway, thanks for the things you've done precious.

I am officially ignoring you all. I do not have time to waste my positive energy on people who are biased as you have all been towards me.
You do not know me to judge me.

You do not pay my bills I pay my own so you are nothing to me but ignorant words.

My kids are born from cruel Philippine persons who do not want them so I am the one raising four as I love them and no one in their right mind would do that to their own kids.(Only Philippines)
My aunt was correct in what she said about me coming here. I argued with her that people from here are so nice (read choke)apparently it appears as if I have been made a liar of what I said to her what would you call it.

let's face are there any nice persons anywhere anymore?

I will go to another web site and stop promoting this one, this one can stay with the you mean persons.

It's gotten out of control since Mike is not moderating it, and since his father has passed on a couple of days ago and we are friends and write in the same paper here I do not want to continue being bashed by persons I have defended for years. The language and manners in her by the International moderators is filthy and Mike is to sweet and does not deserve that kind of trash being put in his web site. So I know how to respect and you guys can have your web site cult what have you not. Leave me out untill you can have the decency to be good to all.
Many friends back home asked me why am I coming here, I have my family here.

Remember beauty is skin deep and they say always say BOHOLana Beauty?

I have yet to see sincere Boholana beauty? Looy!

As I said I am wasting my time. I have other friends inviting me to join other sites.

You guys do not deserve my concern and care any longer, and those of you in BTMA here thank you for not putting me down as you know I am jolly and sweet.

Lets just say and and be fair to everyone who wins achievements and honors in the service as we have many unsung heroes who have never been recognized out on the real battle feeds.
Many philippine soldiers and soldiers just about every where have sporting competitions for speed agility, and how to think fast.
many are not heard about who are also high achievers as well in performance.
I say as I have said it before I salute all good soldiers all over the world no matter what flag they are fighting under but they are fighting the rights for the world not just for their own country.
Specail pak pak pak to all who serve the world into trying to make it a better place.

We all salute all soldiers and other service men and women who risked their lives to fight for justice and peace.  As I said before and I'll say it again, I specifically recognized US Army Seeker because he was the SUBJECT in this thread but it doesn't mean I do not recognize other people - soldiers or non soldiers i.e., medical volunteers.
