« on: January 24, 2008, 08:04:48 PM »
The local chapter of the Environmental Legal Assistance Center, Inc. (ELAC) has allayed public fears in the event of an oil spill in the body of water separating Bohol and Cebu.

A Philippine Coast Guard observation showed that the Cebu Strait is the gateway of oil tanker traffic that could be dangerous in case one of them sinks in the course of navigating the narrow passage.

The passage becomes narrow in the strait where oil tanker and other vessels whether those plying domestic routes or ocean-going because of the many islands dotting the seascape between the two provinces.

The passageway on the part of Bohol is home to several islands like Panglao, Balicasag, Cabilao and Pamilacan. These islands, known as the Bohol Island Marine Triangle, are the leading tourist attractions and the habitat of thousands of newly-discovered marine species. They are also known of their world-class diving sites.

Being one who lives on the pacific northwest coastline let me tell you what it is really hard to clean up ans safe animals who are affected by such accidents as spills.

Iwant to say buyag in hopes that it would never happen or the environment here would never be the same again for the white sandy beach edges that we have now.

We are at risk here. Our multi million tourism industry is at stake.

What is the use of our elected Provincial Officials. Let the voice of the people be heared through them. Once again, I hate to say that we are not paying them just to sit and drink coffee.

Its morning in the Philippines right now, so good morning Boholanos and enjoy your coffee.

Lets not wait until Panglao will suffer the same fate as Guimaras Island back in 2006. No amount of compensation can restore back the white sands of Guimaras. Authorities said that it would take a decade for their white sand to be cleansed through natural forces. Even the toxic chemicals that seep through thier ground affected thier famous mango plantation. Even the US refused to buy thier mangoes in fear of contamination.
