Starting early this month, passengers from Bohol can now take another route via Bato, Leyte without the hassles of disembarking from several transportations to get their way to Manila, thanks to the Strong Republic Nautical Highway program as described in President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo latest State of the Nation Address (SONA) and as outlined in the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan.

The Strong Republic Nautical Highway is a program of the present administration that aims to link the entire country and also connects the Visayas island, in the fastest possible way to Luzon via Roll-On Roll-Off ports in Bato, Leyte.

According to the local booking office operator based in Bato. Leyte, there are already four brand new buses who are operating in the new route at this point in time. However, they are expecting a total of twenty buses to ply the new route from Bohol to Manila.

The daily trip from Bohol conducts passengers to Leyte, Samar, Cubao, Pasay, Alabang and FTI and vise versa in one day, Yvonne Latok, local operator disclosed in an interview with PIA Southern Leyte.

It was further learned that initial schedules records buses left from Tagbilaran, Bohol to Bato at 4:00 in the afternoon. That, everyday, there are two trips being scheduled regularly to ply that kicks off from Bato to Bohol at 9:00 am and 6:00 in the evening, she added.

Meanwhile, in Southern Leyte a Php 60 Billion has been earmarked to fund the upgrading of national roads, highways and bridges, including a 2 kilometer viaduct in Sogod town in Southern Leyte worth about Php 800 Million.

According to DPWH Southern Leyte District Engineer Carlos Veloso, a groundbreaking ceremony for the viaduct in Sogod has been scheduled on April 30, 2007. (PIA Southern Leyte)
