Congratulations Manny Pacquiao: De la Hoya Hospitalized
« on: December 07, 2008, 02:20:10 PM »
By TIM DAHLBERG, AP Boxing Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP)—The end for Oscar De La Hoya on this night came as he sat in the corner after the eighth round, his left eye swollen shut and his face bruised by punches Manny Pacquiao seemed able to land almost at will.

The decision to call it a night was easy. The decision to call it a career may be a lot tougher.

“My heart still wants to fight, that’s for sure,” De La Hoya said. “But when your physical doesn’t respond, what can you do? I have to be smart and make sure I think about my future plans.”

Pacquiao gave De La Hoya a lot to think about by beating and battering him around the ring for eight rounds Saturday night before De La Hoya declined to answer the bell for the ninth round. The domination was shocking enough, but the fact that it came at the hands of a fighter who just nine months earlier had been fighting at 129 pounds had to be even more troubling for De La Hoya and his legions of fans.

De La Hoya absorbed such a beating that he was taken to a hospital afterwards for what was described as a precautionary examination. The most popular fighter of his generation won just one round on one ringside scorecard and none on the other two against a smaller opponent who fought bigger than him from the opening bell on.

“We knew we had him after the first round,” Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said. “He had no legs, he was hesitant and he was shot.”

Roach trained De La Hoya in his last big fight a year ago and said then that De La Hoya simply couldn’t throw punches when he needed to anymore. That was magnified even more against Pacquiao, who not only was as elusive as Floyd Mayweather Jr. but threw punches back that kept De La Hoya off pace.

“Freddie, you’re right,” De La Hoya told the trainer after the fight. “I just don’t have it anymore.”

If De La Hoya’s career is over, it will be the end of a remarkable story that began when he won the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona in 1992 and went on to become the biggest box office attraction in the sport. But while he sold tickets, De La Hoya hadn’t won a big fight in six years, and there were whispers long before the fight that he had nothing left.

He certainly had nothing against Pacquiao, who fought a lot bigger than he looked and who proved that speed was a lot more important than size against a fighter who at the age of 35 has seen his better days.

“That’s what we were focused on every day in the gym, speed, speed would be the key to this fight,” Pacquiao said. “I trained hard for this fight, and that’s why I deserve tonight.”

De La Hoya’s left eye was swollen shut as he sat on his stool after the eighth round and the ring doctor, referee and his cornermen discussed his condition. De La Hoya offered no complaints when his corner decided he had enough, getting up from his stool and walking to the center of the ring to congratulate the victor.

“You’re still my idol,” Pacquiao told him.

“No, you’re my idol,” De La Hoya said.

It was lopsided from the beginning, with Pacquiao landing punch after punch while De La Hoya chased after him, trying to catch him with a big blow. Pacquiao was winning big even before the seventh round, when he was pounding De La Hoya against the ropes in his corner and catching him with huge shots that knocked him across the ring.

De La Hoya remained upright, but with one eye closed and his reflexes seemingly gone there was no chance he was going to land the big punches he would have needed to turn the fight around. Ringside statistics showed Pacquiao landed 45 power punches in the seventh round to just four for De La Hoya.

“He’s just a great fighter,” De La Hoya said. “I have nothing bad to say about him. He prepared like a true champion.”

Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 knockouts) came up two weight classes to fight for his biggest purse ever, while De La Hoya dropped down to meet him at 147 pounds. Though De La Hoya (39-6) towered over Pacquiao and had a big reach advantage over him, Pacquiao had no trouble getting inside what few jabs De La Hoya threw to land his shots.

Pacquiao was credited with landing 224 of 585 punches to just 83 of 402 for De La Hoya.

Pacquiao will earn a guaranteed $11 million, while De La Hoya was expected to make at least twice that by the time all the pay-per-view revenues are totaled up. - AP and Yahoo

I was wrong. I thought it will go all the way to 12 with Pacman winning by unanimous decision. But it was one mistake I was glad I made! Horray for Manny! Pak-pak tang tanan  ;D

The fight is totally a mis match as Oscar finds no answer to Manny's assualt, It is almost true that Manny is like Henry Amstrong the great champion in 1930's. Congrats PACMAN you taught Oscar a boxing lesson.

Okay lets move on to other important topic so this guy can punch good for him he is very rich so there are some of us who are educated and do well swith our love for work also.
Do we get as rich as he does for a sport that is so brutal what I do not get honestly is this country is into the brutality of fighting with its animals via cock fighting and now boxxing and a man making loads when most Philippine persons sacrifice and pay for a good educatio to have a career that pays descent wages.

I think it is so weird this country is happy for a man who knows nothing but how to use his wit and talents in boxing strategeis and also how he make so much more money compared to some one who has spent a long time studying.

He is ery lucky he can make that kind of money in America is he paying taxxes in America for his winnings?

I strongly disagree that brutal sport like boxing is only in the Philippines
it is an international sport even more popular in South America and boxing
is a profession like any other sports

Precious, there are also American boxers and when they win in this "brutal fight", Americans also are happy and proud and they celebrate.  It is not just about "so weird in this country (Philippines)". It's all over.  Boxers like Manny Pacquiao works more than the Hollywood actors and actresses.  Does it bother you too that these Hollywood people have huge houses and earn more than one can ever imagine compared to a scientist or a topnotch professor?

I would never waste my money to watch a boxing but that's just me.  My heart just can not take to see people being beaten.  But do I take it against a country whose player won? No.  Pacquiao won but De La Hoya got more than the guaranteed prize for Pacquiao.  Is it also weird for Mexico to embrace in this kind of game or is it only "this country" Philippines that is weird?

About taxes, you are a journalist, don't you have any inkling how  Las Vegas in America benefited from holding the fight there?

tHATS GOOD FOR LAS VEGAS BUT THAT IS NOT FOR THE ENTIRE US IT IS LOCAL AND BEING THAT HE IS NOT A NATIONAL AND IS NOT A CITIZEN THERE HE DOES NOT HAVE A AN AMERICAN SOCAIL SECURITY CARD THERE. I am not so sure how Visa's work maybe the tax is taken off the top?

i THINK IT WOULD BE INTERESTING SINCE HE IS A NATIONAL HERE JUST TO SEE HOW MUCH THEY DO DEDUCT AS FAR AS TAXXES.

i AM ALSO MAD ABOUT THE cONGRESS BAIL OUT OF AUTO MAKERS WHY NOT HELP ALL BUSINESSES OUT THOSE FACTORIES ARE MOSTLY IN mICHIGAN sTATE.

AMERICA IS ALSO NOT IN THE SAME SHAPE AS SHILIPPINES and we do not just focus our lives around sports how they do here.

Here in Philippines I feel some priorities need to be in order other than Boxxing, Basketball and Bahalina! If certain priorities should come first then once those other things start bennefiting others as a majority and there is improvement here in this nation then by all means enjoy every day talking and patronizing about a sports hero who does well for himself.

I am not opposed to him or anyone else winning its the value and the amount of time being ussed for somerthing as boxxing or any other competitive sport its so commercail and organized these days.

The world is full of people who do great for others who make a difference in bettering the lives of others do they get the attention same as a sports hero who does good for himself.

Pacman has more games to come and more money to win I wish him and any other manin this world as much luck health and and good victory.
Pacman has won the match last Sunday but last night while passing along the streets in Tagbilaran young children and adults are still sleeping in the streets while people pay more attention to one country man and one fight against another man.

I see many Filipino at this internet cafe working on processing paper's to get the heck out of this country and make better for themselves in greener pastures.
Pacman won last Sunday I have yet to see his money help those here have better lives since the people patronize him so much what can he do here to make this place better and make people want to stay here instead to find work.

Sure Grazie if he was producing many jobs for people to work at and providing sub divisions for the homeless people to live in and doing other good things for his people here then by all means he deseerves every amount of attention that he gets.

I feel the same way about him and others from around the world who do so well and are loved by many for their accomplishments and that they should spread their wealth for charitable causes after they have extra from spending it on what they need.

Sports like this give the wrong impression to youth these days as if education is not important and if being discovered as a sports player is a better option but we know thats "one in a million and a chance of a life time".
A song sang before from a well known Boholano who could not handle the spot light for to long.

Instead that man had a family and came back home to his grass roots to a place where he chooses to raise his family more then anywhere in the world.

Fame is not everything alone my friends it is how you handle and use it that matters most of all.

Grazie I am not wanting to argue or be mean about things I think when it is time to call be back to earth and reality and pay more attention on the things the could make a nicer change to live with in the world at present.

Pacquiao is a "FOX" is he not girls? ;)

Pwede man na ihitag kay Manny. Manny brings honor and glory (not GMA) to the Filipino nations. Ang title ng degree niya, Doctor of Boxing Science and Arts.
