Boholana Jailed in Hong Kong
« on: August 10, 2008, 12:16:43 AM »
By Ven Arigo

A Boholana maid was arrested and has been jailed in Hong Kong since last Friday for a crime her father and boyfriend could not---and never---believe she could commit.

Events happened so swiftly that Bea (not her real name) was transferred to a central prison as soon as her case for alleged stealing was heard three days after her female employer had her nabbed by the police on the night of August 2.

Her father Victor and boyfriend Noel have been so worried because the overseas Filipina worker (OFW) from Loon could no longer be contacted.

Noel told the Chronicle they learned the fate of Bea from a staff of her placement agency in Hong Kong last Sunday.

He had talked to the staff thru a long distance call arranged by his girlfriend’s cousin Veronica, who is also an OFW in Hong Kong.

Veronica contacted her cousin’s female employer named Au Wai Ling, but who reportedly denied any knowledge of her Boholana helper’s case, much less the latter’s whereabouts.

Bea’s father and boyfriend reported her case to the office of Rep. Edgar Chatto for any assistance the solon can provide.

It was learned that only the Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong thru a certain Atty Gil can access to Bea’s prison in a place called Tsun Mum.

Victor and Noel sought the help of the First District congressman whom they learned has assisted OFWs in distress or critical in different foreign job sites.
The Boholana maid was accused by her employer of stealing $600.

Victor said Bea has been a good, obedient child while Noel insisted his girlfriend is an honest girl.
Besides, Bea was supposed to get her July salary at the time she allegedly stole money.

Bea, now 24, finished education at the Central Visayas State College of Agriculture, Forestry and Technology (CVSCAFT) – Calape Campus while her boyfriend, a townmate, presently works as a Waterfront Hotel bartender.

Noel suspected that Bea was framed up by her own employer because the OFW earlier confided to him by text messaging that she had a verbal altercation with her employer.

Three fellow OFWs had worked for Bea’s employer earlier and they all stayed for three months only or even less.  The said employer would always terminate her maids.

Noel and Bea contacted each other on the very same night of August when she was supposedly fetched by the police at the house of her employer.

Noel recounted that it was already past 10 in the evening when Bea texted him to stop contacting since her employer had already arrived.

He could no longer contacted Bea since then until Sunday when Noel decided to text to her cousin in Hong Kong if she, Bea and another cousin named Sally might meet on the said day.  OFWs in Hong Kong have been used to gather on Sundays, their rest days.

Because Bea could no longer be contacted, Veronica went to her cousin’s placement agency whose staff was able to directly inform Noel, thru Veronica’s cellphone, that his girlfriend is in jail.

The father of the OFW and her boyfriend are further saddened by this:  They checked with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration website and found out that Bea’s agency is not POEA-accredited.

I am sure the Philippine Republic will come and help her out. Maybe even Chatto or some one like that.

Many times Philippine OFW's are advised to go with POEA work sites abroad for reasons such as these.
