The Bohol Chronicle

The family of Boholano ship captain Florencio Marimon Sr. broke their silence on Wednesday as the skipper of the sunken MV Princess of the Stars was laid to rest in Cebu.

Rose Marimon, the wife of Florencio Sr., appealed for understanding from the victims of the sea tragedy saying they “all suffered losses.”

Rose said the family did not mean to hide the captain but only wanted to mourn in private and spend the past days with Florencio Sr.

She said the family was planning to announce her husband’s death only after the burial at the Pardo Public Cemetery.

According to Rose, the body of her husband was among 76 remains retrieved in Masbate on July 21, a month after the vessel sank near Sibuyan Island, Romblon at the height of typhoon “Frank”.

The body of Florencio Sr., whose roots is from Catagbacan, Loon town, was identified by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) victims’ identification team last Sunday.

The DNA of the captain’s remains matched those submitted by his relatives.

Suspicions that the ship captain was still alive and in hiding ended with his burial last Wednesday.
Florencio Sr., who would have turned 55 in October, was reported to be alive after his family purportedly received a phone call from him informing them that he survived the sea tragedy and was somewhere in Iloilo City the day after the vessel capsized off Romblon.

Marimon had been with Sulpicio Lines Inc., the owner of the Princess of the Stars, since 1976 and rose through the ranks to become on of the shipping firms most trusted skippers.

Rose was accompanied by her five children, two of whom are still in college, during the burial.
There were at least 59 Boholanos reported missing after the sinking of the “Princess of the Stars”.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Good for them. I know what it is like to be related to a merchant marine family especaily an ofw.
People always have rude comments about seamen who travel around the world. Accidents happen and that is just a fact and a timing in life when they do.

That storm was fast when iot whipped through here. By seamen law the boats that sie must be sent back out to sea in such cases.

In oregon coast a crew a Filipine crew ship M/V New Carissa had lost engine power during a heavy rain and wind storm and it went aground and could neer be saved.

The crew was rescues but the boat manned by Baliwag shipping in Manila had to be dynamited apart and it hauled normaly cedar chips from the west coast shores to the Japanese Islands.

Many vessel incidents happen and when families donot hear from merchant seamen loved ones you tnd to only want and hoppe for the best.

Many books have been written about the loss of all kinds of ships at sea many that are even unrecorded untill today.

Its sad news all around.

I am glad that Kit Bagaipo wrote this story with good tactics.

anyone who makes rude comments about seamen and they're lifestyles should be sensitive in what they are saying many Filipino depend on they're brea and butter coming from the shipping way of life.

look at the train accident in California the death toll is still climbing from just three days ago it was an accident for both accidents accidents do not make us bad.

My mom always tells me there is a reason for everything that happens good or bad.

May the bereaved families in all the fatal accidents all over the world not listen too much to negative garbage of others and remember the love ones they did lose always for the better of times when they were alive.

May he (Captain) rest in peace.

Ship is my wife
ship is my life
ship is where I sleep
Ship is where I will die

Consider pleasures as they depart, Not as they come.
