Acting swiftly to control the spread of the deadly pest, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Bohol passed a Resolution urging the local government units in the province to act fast by regulating and monitoring and contain the infestation of the so-called coco leaf "hispine" beetle, or Brontispa Longissima Gestro. .
Presiding the session last week, Vice-Gov. Julius Caesar Herrera stressed that along with this measure, there must be massive information campaign to raise awareness among coconut farmers in the province.
The vice-governor said that with the approval of the Resolution the LGUs must also give their fair share in the prevention of the infestation.
Initiated by the agriculture committee, the Resolution introduced by committee member Board Member Josil Trabajo, was strongly recommended by Provincial Agriculturist Liza Quirog and the top guns of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) led by Timoteo Lago Jr. Both Quirog and Lago and other PCA personnel personally met with Herrera to give updates of the infestation.
PCA said that there are now three municipalities - Baclayon, Alburquerque and Dauis - that are affected by the pest.
