The BRP Ramon Alcaraz is the Philippine Navy's 2nd Frigate to be purchased from the US Coast Guard.

The crown jewel of the Philippines Navy is on its way to the Philippines the BSR Ramon Alcaraz PF 16.

The ship was acquired from the US Coast Guard in 2012 and underwent renovations and testing for the past year.

The 378-foot long battle shipped is equipped with twin Diesel engines and a canon, but also the comforts
of home â€” with Filipino cooking on board and balikbayan boxes full of gifts from the Filipino community in South Carolina where the ship departed from last month.

Itâ€™s the second ship the US has given to the Philippines in the past two years as the Philippine military continues to upgrade its fleet.

Upon receiving it President Aquino asked that this ship be named after a Filipino naval hero, and his teamâ€™s research dug up World War II hero Commodore Ramon Alcaraz who passed away four years ago.

The Alcaraz family now based in Southern California came to visit the ship.
â€œIâ€™m so happy, I donâ€™t know, Iâ€™m so happy (laugh crying) my husband is smiling up there, said the late commodoreâ€™s widow Concepcion.

The PF16 will patrol the seas surrounding the Philippinesâ€¦including the west Philippine Sea where the Philippones and China are caught in a territorial dispute.

â€œHindi lang Spratly kundi sa buong lugar ng Pilipinas kung saan na kailangan ng presence ng malaking barko,â€ explained Captain Ernesto Baldovino.

The PF 16 will leave San Diego on Friday, taking a three week journey to the Philippines with brief stops in Hawaii and Guam.

When it arrives in Subic it will get a new paint job before its commissioned and activated for duty.

The Philippine Navy has also purchased Harpoon Anti-Ship Missiles from the United States Navy, which will be installed on the BRP Ramon Alcaraz and on the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar. These two warships , upon installation, will have the capability of sinking any enemy capital ships who dare to threaten the territorial integrity of the Republic of the Philippines.

They will think twice of trying to engage in illegal activity if they see the two frigates within the vicinity.

These two warships, the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar and the BRP Ramon Alcaraz, supported by the BRP Emilio Jacinto, BRP Apolinario Mabini and the BRP Artemio Ricarte is a formidable task force that can stand up to any foreign naval presence in our area of actual control.

The Philippine Navy is not the only segment of the Armed Forces that will be augmented, but the Air Force as well. The Philippines is to acquire 12 F-50 strategic air fighters that will give the Air Force the capability to protect the air space of the country. In addition, will be an essential partner in cooperating with the Navy in isolating / pin pointing enemy crafts within Philippine territory.

Objectively speaking, we still stand no chance at all. These acquisitions simply show that we intend to put up a fight, and that we intend to keep at it longer than we could without upgraded materiel.
