Burglars struck anew in Bilar town, carting away two century-old church icons, including “Ressurreccion†believed to be taken just after the annual fiesta celebration here, said the caretaker in an exclusive interview.
The caretakers, who declined to be named, asked authorities and the media to help recover the said icons. They asked authorities to monitor all exit points out of the province even as they expressed fears the icons might fall in the hands of unscrupulous antique buyers and collectors.
Police authorities here still are facing a blank wall as to who are the perpetrators of the latest series of robbery.
The robbery was the second theft incident in a month. The first was in Sevilla when a precious image in Sevilla town church lost to robbers, whose identities still unidentified. Walter Pondoc, information officer designate of this town confirmed this.
According to the caretaker’s account the “Ressurreccion†was supposed to be taken out after the fiesta celebration but only to know that the icon was gone.
The caretaker said that the icon was stationed at the church for the recent Holy Week celebration. They were told to take back the icon to their home after the fiesta last May 15.
They said that the icon was also some sort of “sentimental†on their part because it was taken care of by their grandparents since then they also take care of the image which is made of wood but the eyes are precious materials. (RVO)
