ABOUT 30 passengers including 10 children were rescued from a passenger motor banca that capsized near the shoreline of western Cabul-an, an islet of Buenavista, Bohol at past 1 p.m yesterday.
The MB Althel capsized after its wooden foundation sustained a crack, causing the vessel to be flooded.
The boat left Pasil fishport in Cebu City at 11 a.m. and was supposed to arrive in Kidamguhaw islet in Bien Unido, Bohol at 3 p.m.
Teresito Valmoria, the skipper, said the crack in the boat's wooden foundation forced him to immediately maneuver towards the shoreline.
The boat sank before it reached the shoreline but the passengers did not panic since the area was already shallow by the time.
Though the sea was moderately rough, there were no rains.
The local Pagasa office said the Visayas merely experienced the tailend of a cold front.
Later Valmoria admitted that the crack was a result of the ship's aging foundation.
He denied that the boat was overloaded, saying there were only 30 people aboard and the cargoes were not that heavy.
Valmoria said the fishermen fetched the children and brought them to the barangay hall of Western Cabul-an.
Teofila Tagsip, Western Cabul-an barangay captain, provided food and dry clothes for the drenched passengers.
The owner of the boat, Alipio Esclamado, sent another boat from Bien Unido to fetch the rescued passengers in Cabul-an island. /Correspondent Jhunnex Napallacan
