Bohol Chronicle: The ambush of two members of the Uy family of Baclayon town, known wealthy copra buyers, may not only be plain robbery.
This was the observation of PNP Prov'l Director Constantino Barot Jr. who immediately headed Task Force Uy to hunt the perpetrators who shot dead Conchita Realista Uy, 69 while seriously wounding her brother, Angelito, 66 while both were on board their multicab cruising the highway in barangay Canapnapan, Corella town last Thursday morning.
The PNP director said that the manner the suspects chased the victims whose multicab already fell on a canal could prove something beyond the motive of robbery. In fact, some paper bills amounting to P31,000 were found in the exit route of the suspects.
Robbers normally declare a hold-up, Barot said.
However, in the case of the Uys, the suspects never declared a hold-up but just kept on firing, aiming at the seat of Angelita, based on the traces of bullets in the vehicle.
"We are in doubt that robbery was the main motive," the PNP director theorized.
Police Inspector Miguel Jimenez from PNP Corella said the Uys who are engaged in copra buying were heading to Corella town when two unknown suspects on board a black and white XRM motorcycle tried to overtake the multicab driven by Angelito.
Sensing the danger, Angelito sped up the vehicle. However, the back rider of the motorcycle started to fire shots aiming to the victims until a bullet hit one of the tires.
The Uys moved farther ahead until the other tire was again hit which caused the vehicle to skid towards a canal.
In its initial investigation, the police noted that the suspects went past the victims' vehicle and turned back for a clean shot on Angelita, causing her instantaneous death.
A 23-year old helper of the Uys who was at the back of the vehicle managed to jump from the multicab and sought refuge in a nearby house.
The suspects, after hitting the victims, took the brown shoulder bag containing an undetermined amount of cash and immediately escaped heading towards Sikatuna town, police investigators said.
Responding police personnel recovered paper bills in the two brown shoulder bags amounting to P31,560 left by the suspects as they hurriedly left the crime scene.
The Uys were rushed to the Ramiro Hospital where Conchita was confirmed dead while her brother was attended to by physicians. Angelito was transferred to another hospital where he has been pronounced out of danger. (Anthony Aniscal)
