O God, who hast established the earth upon firm foundations, graciously receive the prayers of Thy people: and, having utterly removed the dangers of the shaken earth, turn the terrors of Thy divine wrath into the means of the salvation of mankind; that they who are of the earth, and unto earth shall return, may rejoice to find themselves citizens of heaven by means of a holy life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer in Times of Calamity

Let us pray

God our Father, look kindly on us in distress. May we come nearer to your presence to seek true refuge in this time of calamity. May we continue to trust, to hope and to love, give each other comfort and encouragement. May generous people come to the aid of those who are most in need – those who lost loved ones and homes. Let your spirit strengthen us to face all the hardships and difficulties of the present and of the days ahead. We remember the counsel of Jesus, your Son, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Have faith in God and faith in me.” Help us to turn to you always for you know all our needs and you always provide for us.
Amen.

an update:

Bohol Gov Edgar Chatto, in an interview on ANC, said there are incoming reports of damage across the province, particularly to old buildings.

"[The quake] was really very strong. People now are a little bit in a situation of panic," Chatto told ANC.

People in the province are also monitoring abnormal sea level changes for possibility of a tsunami, but Chatto said there is little chance of it because the province is surrounded by other islands.

"We are still getting in touch with mayors, disaster officials of towns facing the Mindanao Sea, ito ang malawak," he said. "We are just asking people to be cautious but not to be panicky."

more update:

Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto said on DZMM TeleRadyo that more are being rushed to the hospital and that local government units are already preparing for aftershocks.

According to the Philippine Information Agency in Cebu, aftershocks continue to be felt.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reassured the public that no tsunami is expected to hit due to the earthquake, but Lt Cmndr Armand Balilo, spokesperson of the Philippine Coast Guard, said they have suspended docking of big boats in Cebu and Bohol for now, following damages in their Tagbilaran station.

"Thank God today is a holiday," Quisimbing told Rappler. Loss of life and property damage would have been much more if classes and offices were not closed to observe Id-ul-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice.

Flights to and from Tagbilaran and Cebu have also been suspended. - With reports from Natashya Gutierrez/Rappler.com

I'm so sad to see the damage on such a beautiful church. The people of Loboc will rebuild. I hope and pray no one was injured!!

sayang gyod, loll.  this is a tourist attraction because it is ancient and largely untouched.  i'm still waiting for some pictures of baclayon church, which is said to be the oldest church structure in its original form in the philippines.

Initial data released by the USGS said there were two earthquakes, both centered in Bohol.

The quake was followed by 110 aftershocks, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said in a press conference at the NDRRMC.

Solidum said more damage can be expected in the areas closest to the quake's epicenter, specifically in Bohol and Cebu.
