Philippine Daily InquirerTwenty-nine persons were rescued from a motorized passenger outrigger as the vessel encountered rough seas near a coral reef off Bohol on Friday, the Philippine Coast Guard said Saturday.
Chief Petty Officer Saturnino Encenso of the Cebu Coast Guard district said the M/B Vanessa left Cebu City at about 2 p.m. Friday carrying 21 passengers and eight crew members. The banca was headed for Getafe in northern Bohol when it encountered rough seas at about 5 p.m.
The engine conked out after sea water entered the banca and the vessel was swept towards Buwahan Reef, about five miles southwest of Getafe.
The Coast Guard substation in Getafe town sent another banca to the Buwahan Reef, to bring the passengers and crew members to the Getafe port.
Armando Danag of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration in Mactan, Cebu said the strong waves were caused by the southwest monsoon, which in turn was enhanced by Tropical Storm Hanna.
