29 Boat Passengers Rescued from furious Bohol sea

Philippine Daily Inquirer

Twenty-nine persons were rescued from a motorized passenger outrigger as the vessel encountered rough seas near a coral reef off Bohol on Friday, the Philippine Coast Guard said Saturday.

Chief Petty Officer Saturnino Encenso of the Cebu Coast Guard district said the M/B Vanessa left Cebu City at about 2 p.m. Friday carrying 21 passengers and eight crew members. The banca was headed for Getafe in northern Bohol when it encountered rough seas at about 5 p.m.

The engine conked out after sea water entered the banca and the vessel was swept towards Buwahan Reef, about five miles southwest of Getafe.

The Coast Guard substation in Getafe town sent another banca to the Buwahan Reef, to bring the passengers and crew members to the Getafe port.

Armando Danag of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration in Mactan, Cebu said the strong waves were caused by the southwest monsoon, which in turn was enhanced by Tropical Storm Hanna.

Mike what kind of port authority would of allowed this boat to sail as we had been experiencing gale wind forces since yesterday late afternoon?
These passangers and these crew members better be thanking their lucky stars and clovers that they were rescued and not some tragic statistic with Hanna so close any boater knows to take coverage and stay out of dangers way even if you have to find a hurricane hole to borough into to stay safe.

Precious, I don't have the details of the story. Perhaps the passengers insisted on sailing despite strong winds. But, of course, the coast guard could have canceled the trip.
