1 Bol-anon Killed by Typhoon; 8 Persons Missing in Getafe
« on: June 22, 2008, 11:33:01 am »
Reported by Sen Guingguing
Bohol Sunday Post

Like the rest of the Visayas, Typhoon Frank (international codename: Fengshen) pounded the province of Bohol since Friday until yesterday morning with heavy rains and gusty winds leaving in its wake one person dead.

The lone fatality in Bohol brought to 15 the number of deaths throughout the country as the fury of Frank also dumped heavy rains in some parts of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The typhoon also forced the evacuation of thousands of others in some parts of the country.

Eight persons who were earlier reported missing in Getafe where later found to be safe after they were rescued in Caubian Island, sitio Dako, Lapulapu City in Cebu.

The eight, all fishermen are now back in barangay Masingin, after a joint rescue operations made up of the local police, Coast Guard in coordination with the local government of the town, was mounted as soon as the alarm was sounded. Only four of the reported and later found were identified. They are  a certain John Mark Dico and Ronel Dico. The two brothers where last seen fishing off the seawaters of Masingin when they encountered strong waves.

A pumpboat owned by barangay captain Artemio Vergara was sent to retrieve the missing fishermen. The rescue team, composed of Benjie Ocaba and Gualberto Ocaba, scoured the seas between Getafe and Lapulapu to look for the two fishermen only to be reported  missing themselves.

Follow up operations by the combined elements of rescuers showed that all eight missing persons are now all accounted for.

While the missing fishermen are now safe in their respective homes in the Getafe island, a laborer from Mansasa  this city was reported to have drowned in the seawaters off  the barangay.

He was identified as Jorge Salao, 33, a native of barangay Poblacion, Mabini town. It was not known what brought him to Mansasa.

Reports reaching the Post indicated  that the victim took a bath in the Mansasa seawaters Friday afternoon.

Although the place where he took a bath is secured from the lashing winds of Frank as it is blocked by the mountain ranges of Dauis, the victim reportedly drowned after he suffered an apparent heart attack.

There were efforts by concerned residents to revive the victim but he was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.

Until yesterday afternoon, the strong force of the storm appeared to have subsided after two days of heavy rains and gusty winds.

Most of the provinces in the Visayas were not spared by Typhoon Frank.

As in Bohol, Cebu, Samar, Leyte and Biliran also bore the brunt of the storm’s strong winds and intermittent rainfall. All day long Friday, Bohol experienced heavy rains and howling winds felling trees and destroying ricelands in some parts of Bohol’s interior towns.

Although described by the local Pagasa as slow moving but packing strong winds, the  tropical depression lashes gusts of up to 160 kilometers per hour but moves at only 19 kph.

At the first sign that Bohol is  under Storm Signal Number One, DepEd Regional Director Carolino Mordeno lost no time in suspending classes in elementary and high school levels. The Deped official was in Bohol to broker the misunderstanding between City Mayor Dan Neri Lim

and City DepEd Supt. Norma Varquez.

The announcement to suspend classes apparently came in  late as students had already made it to their schools and went on to attend classes anyway.

In Ubay, a report made by V-Mayor Galicano Atup showed that damage to property in that eastern town was minimal. He made the disclosure in an interview with DYTR News.

While reports of inter-island vessels were not allowed by the local Coast Guard as Typhoon Frank came lashing  in ferocious velocity, a 13-gross tonnage vessel was reported stranded in an island near Southern Leyte after it sought refuge from strong waves.

The MV Lolita 2 which was loaded with 16 passengers and seven crewmembers sent a distress call to Cong. Edgar Chatto of the first district for any financial help.

Losing no time, the first district lawmaker coordinated with Southern Leyte Gov. Damian Mercado and the other Leyte solons.

In Jagna, the passenger vessel M/V Dona Rita of Gothong Shipping Lines made an emergency docking near the seawall of barangay Pagina.

As of yesterday afternoon  both the local Coast Guard and in Cebu are  still prohibiting the  trips of fast craft boats to and from Cebu. When the weather normalizes possibly today, these fast craft ferries will resume their regular schedule.

As Frank slammed Bohol the rest of the day Friday, this city experienced a series of power outages in successive intervals. Tagbilaran is getting its power from the Leyte-Bohol Interconnection Project.

The rest of Bohol however under the service areas of the two Bohol electric cooperatives was spared of any power disruption.
