Nonito Donaire, Jr. remains confident that he has Fernando Montiel’s numbers going into their much anticipated bantamweight showdown slated on February 19 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“You can’t teach old dog new tricks. He has tremendous power like he’s had for quite some time now,†said the 28-year-old Donaire, who carries a 25 win, 1-loss card that includes 17 victories via stoppage, as quoted in Mark Vester’s write-up posted at the Boxing Scene website.
“Since I’ve ever seen him, he’s always had that power and he’s always had that left hook. I expect the same fight from him,†Donaire continued. “I think I know the weakness that he brings to the ring and I’m going to exploit that and take advantage of it.â€
Donaire also expressed that such knowledge will play a vital role in his preparations as he anticipates a tough challenge from Montiel (43-2-2, 33 KOs) — the 31-year-old WBO/WBC champion from Mexico.
“I think so [training is easier]. I get familiar with it. It’s more textbook than anything, then going in there with a guy who does the unexpected. I can fight right-handed and I can fight left-handed so there are a lot of things that they can expect,†revealed Donaire, who might be coming into the fight as the betting favorite. “With him, even though I know his movements, he still has that power.†- Erickson Beco, Manila Bulletin
