MANILA, Philippines –Boxing experts had different perspectives on how the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight [yesterday] should have ended.
While the Filipinos celebrated after ring announcer Michael Buffer announced a majority decision victory by Pacquaio, some American writers saw it should have ended with either a Marquez win or a draw instead.
Chris Mannix, Sports Illustrated's staff writer on boxing and basketball, scored it 116-112 for 'Dinamita' after giving six rounds to him and just four to Pacman.
"Highway robbery," said Mannix on his Twitter account @ChrisMannixSI where he had a profile pic with Pacquiao in one of the press conferences he attended with the Sarangani Congressman.
Dan Rafael, espn.com boxing writer and sports commentator, and Kevin Iole, who writes boxing and mixed martial arts column for Yahoo, for their part, thought the bout should have ended in a draw.
"Here we go again. Terrfic fight and I gave rd 12 to Marquez. 114-114," said the bearded Rafael also on his Twitter @danrafaelespn.
"I give Marquez the 12th. I have it ... a draw. 114-114, six rounds apiece," twitted Iole on @KevinI.
ESPN sportswriter Chris Broussard, writing boxing as well as developments on the NBA lockout, for his part, thought it was a standoff or a Marquez triumph.
"Great fight. Tough to call. I'd say a Draw or Marquez," he said on @Chris Boussard.
Recah Trinidad, one of the hard-hitting sports columnists in the country today who is currently in Indonesia covering the ongoing 26th Southeast Asian Games, was equally blunt in his assessments.
"Objectively, panalo si Marquez, magalit na sila kung magalit (I don't care if they get angry with me but I think Marquez won)," Trinidad replied when interviewd via phone by a popular AM radio station.
"He (Pacquiao) was so predictable, maybe he has no more hunger and drive just like before," he said.
