Pacquiao wins by majority decision over Marquez

By Kamal Wallace, CNN
November 13, 2011 -- Updated 0631 GMT (1431 HKT)

(CNN) -- Manny Pacquiao defended his WBO welterweight title at the sold-out MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, defeating Juan Manuel Marquez by majority decision.

Both fighters went toe-to-toe throughout the 12-round fight Saturday night with neither getting knocked down on the canvas.

The fight went down to the Nevada judges' scorecards with Dave Moretti scoring it 115-113, Robert Hoyle 114-114 and Glenn Trowbridge 116-112.

After the decision, Marquez left the ring, apparently upset by the ruling.

This was the third clash between Pacquiao and Marquez. The first bout in 2004 was scored a draw, while Pacquiao won a controversial split decision in the rematch four years later.

In prior meetings, Pacquiao scored four knockdowns yet Marquez won the greater number of rounds.

To further stoke the fire between the fighters, in the days leading up to Saturday's fight, Marquez sported a T-shirt saying, "Marquez beat Pacquiao twice!!"

Pacquiao, who entered the bout having won 10 titles at eight weight divisions, is considered arguably the world's best pound-for-pound boxer.

Now that Pacquiao has defeated Marquez, the next big fight most boxing fans are eagerly waiting for is a potential multimillion-dollar payday against Floyd Mayweather Jr., the other superstar of his boxing generation.

Both fighters have openly said they want to face each other, but each time they try to consummate the fight, negotiations break down over blood and urine testing.

Pacquiao escapes with controversial win

By Dino Paulo Maragay
(The Philippine Star) Updated November 13, 2011 02:11 PM

MANILA, Philippines - WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao retained his title with a questionable majority decision victory over nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas today.

The three judges had scores of 114-114, and 115-113 and 116-112 for Pacquiao, who had himself on the receiving end of Marquez's brilliant counters throughout the fight.

Philstar.com had it 115-113 for Marquez, who once again left the ring in frustration after a night on which he appeared to have solved the Pacquiao puzzle.

"It's clear that I won the fight," Pacquiao said as he was met by jeers from the crowd.

Marquez displayed his fine counterpunching skills to frustrate Pacquiao for most of the fight.

The Filipino icon occassionally landed several left straights to his foe's head and body, but Marquez always came back with a response.

Asked if he would grant Marquez another crack at him, Pacquiao said: "It's up to my promoter. I will fight anyone, anytime."

Experts, scribes disagree with the decision

by Joey Villar (philstar.com) Updated November 13, 2011 03:40 PM

MANILA, Philippines –Boxing experts had different perspectives on how the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight [yesterday] should have ended.

While the Filipinos celebrated after ring announcer Michael Buffer announced a majority decision victory by Pacquaio, some American writers saw it should have ended with either a Marquez win or a draw instead.

Chris Mannix, Sports Illustrated's staff writer on boxing and basketball, scored it 116-112 for 'Dinamita' after giving six rounds to him and just four to Pacman.

"Highway robbery," said Mannix on his Twitter account @ChrisMannixSI where he had a profile pic with Pacquiao in one of the press conferences he attended with the Sarangani Congressman.

Dan Rafael, espn.com boxing writer and sports commentator, and Kevin Iole, who writes boxing and mixed martial arts column for Yahoo, for their part, thought the bout should have ended in a draw.

"Here we go again. Terrfic fight and I gave rd 12 to Marquez. 114-114," said the bearded Rafael also on his Twitter @danrafaelespn.

"I give Marquez the 12th. I have it ... a draw. 114-114, six rounds apiece," twitted Iole on @KevinI.

ESPN sportswriter Chris Broussard, writing boxing as well as developments on the NBA lockout, for his part, thought it was a standoff or a Marquez triumph.

"Great fight. Tough to call. I'd say a Draw or Marquez," he said on @Chris Boussard.

Recah Trinidad, one of the hard-hitting sports columnists in the country today who is currently in Indonesia covering the ongoing 26th Southeast Asian Games, was equally blunt in his assessments.

"Objectively, panalo si Marquez, magalit na sila kung magalit (I don't care if they get angry with me but I think Marquez won)," Trinidad replied when interviewd via phone by a popular AM radio station.

"He (Pacquiao) was so predictable, maybe he has no more hunger and drive just like before," he said.

It was a boring fight. Nothing new. Nothing surprising. Pacquiao should retire now.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 'Infidelity rumors affecting Pacquiao's performance'

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao pulled out a controversial razor-thin triumph against Juan Manuel Marquez in their trilogy bout on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) because relationship rumors are starting to take a toll on the Filipino boxer's performance, a veteran sports analyst said on Monday.

Ronnie Nathanielsz believes that controversies linking Pacquiao to different women are among the reasons why the eight-division world champion nearly lost the match against Marquez.

"The fact remains that it must be a distraction if it's true. Okay, even if it's not true, the publicity must be bothering him, must be getting him down and it also hurts the relationship with Jinkee," Nathanielsz said in an interview on ANC's "Headstart."

"He must settle all these issues because... true or false it puts pressure on him. It puts pressure on his wife and that's not good for their relationship," he added.

Nathanielsz said that aside from infidelity rumors, other commitments such as weekly shows are also starting to affect Pacquiao's boxing performance.

"He's showing signs of decline and it's not because of lack of training... It's because of so many extraneous activities he's involved in," he said.

"His congressional duties, his late nights, his pool (games), his endorsements, his show, that's a debilitating thing."

Pacquiao is currently the congressman of Sarangani province.

Before his fight against Marquez, Pacquiao denied a report saying that his wife, Jinkee, has filed for annulment.

nathanielz was an attack dog of the late Pres. Marcos. he was once most hated by the Filipinos who love democracy. Marcos gave his a Filipino citizenship. He actually came from an unknown country called Sri Lanka.

Nathanielsz has a close tie with Murad Muhammad, Pacquiao's embittered former promoter.

ABS-CBN wants Nathanielsz to attack Pacquiao because the boxer exclusively belongs to GMA-7 where he has a program, and his fight was covered by GMA network. ABS-CBN is just envious of Pacquiao.
