Bisag bisi kaayo musingit sa ko kay I was thinking about putting this thread last night. You just beat me to this, Mike! Don't you guys think we're thinking more and more on the same wavelength, if not altogether alike?

So one of my best reads is Stephen R. Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Naa ra ba'y quotation ang author, si Covey, dinhi sa libro gikan ni Aristotle that TB tambays should ponder:

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Bene,

My books are nearly 1,000 - personal collection. They're kept in Dampas at the house that I rented before. I couldn't transport them to Thailand. Now I have hundreds of ebooks. :)

I have been intending to read Stephen Covey's book but I was always sidetracked by other pursuits. Management consultants would always recommend this book.

Mike,

Hope you find the time to read this book. Yesterday, I re-read it while commuting by train to Tokyo and was refreshed.

Amazingly enough, even without reading it yet, you already show many of the habits the author talks about. Mas mahimong effective ka pa jud.

Mr Benelynne,

I have a copy of that book as well. I first read it in college, then I re-read it again when I was trying to set up a business a few months ago, hoping it would give me a few "insights"...

I'm actually a how-to book junkie. Hahaha. But they say that people who love reading these kinds of books are the ones who can't function in real life. Simbako pud intawon.

Bene,

Thanks Bene. And nothing beats the Bible - everything and anything we need to know about life is found in this holy book.

I also have a collection of Philip Yancey's books: "What's So Amazing About Grace, The Jesus We Never Knew; Fearfully and Wonderfully Made", and many more.

Mike, if you want something light on the eyes (because of your heavy schedule) but packs a punch and makes you ponder, I recommend "The Way of the Shepherd". I posted an outline in this board.
It's a small book with simple but great lessons on management and with principles you can apply when you will become a family man.

Attorney, is this book available at the National Bookstore? I cannot buy it in Thailand. English books here are quite expensive.

I've been reading a real life event books which are really very interesting for romantic ladies but these are all in German language. These books are World best seller and I am sure it is also in English.  I suggest the following:

1.Die Weisse Massai - Corinne Hofmann (Author), it is her true life story
2.Zurück aus Afrika  -     "          "     continuation
3.Wiedersehen in Barsaloi-"         "      the last part
4.Dschungelkind - Sabine Kuegler  (Author) her own childhood story in the Jungle in New Zealand
5.Souad (Bei Lebendigen Leib) - Unknown (a true story of a muslim girl who was burnt alive)
6.Fruhstück mit Kängarus - Bill Byrson - a real Australian adventure
7.Princess Diana's True Story - Simone Simmons (her best gf)
8.Che Guevarra - Daniel James

I read the Middlesex, and it's amazing, I got the first publication 3 years ago long before it was the International Bestseller...\

The author was interview today by Oprah...I was so amazed to see him talked even if it's only on TV....

By the way the author ( for C2) is  Jeffrey Eugenides, FYI...

Hello C2H4!

Probably these books are also in English version because they are World best seller man..especially from Ms. Corinne Hofmann life story. (Just a short one- she was in vacation in Kenia with her engaged man- they came from Switzerland and then she saw this Massai man (krieger-Massai warrior) and it started the love story.  Believe it or not I had read that ist book one night and one day, wana ko ma-ukang bisan ug malibang na lang kay perting thrillinga man.)  It was translated in 16 languages. From her story..you will know what really love is.  The first book was filmed in German too, very inspiring kaajo lagi- Could be in English titled The White Massai.

Ning tan-aw bitaw pud ko. I finally got off work early enough to watch Oprah. The episode itself was interesting. I got sort of intrigued with Middlesex, might borrow one from the library. I'm still thinking about it though, coz the book looks so massive, and really, I'm not as interested in fiction as I used to be.  :-\

But I'll go to the library tomorrow, definitely. Akong basahon tong imong Empire of the Ants, at least dili kaayo siya baga.

Ms Bams, i translate pud pls sa english oi! hehe

Bella, di ba kang Cormac McCarthy gihapon ni siya?

Thanks, Miss Bambs, will check that out.

Do you know of any interesting non-fiction books?

Mr Benelynne,

I have a copy of that book as well. I first read it in college, then I re-read it again when I was trying to set up a business a few months ago, hoping it would give me a few "insights"...

I'm actually a how-to book junkie. Hahaha. But they say that people who love reading these kinds of books are the ones who can't function in real life. Simbako pud intawon.

How did your business go, C2H4?

Actually, my wife tells me every now and then, "Sometimes, you should use your intelligence less and your common sense more."

Three American presidents were sworn in after this book was published in 1990--Bush, Clinton and Bush. Offhand, I can't tell if this book made a difference in their leadership, if they bothered to read it at all. As regards the Bushes, it's probably not in the book, but in the genes.

But it also teaches a valuable lesson.  That a people must strive to deserve better government and demand it from themselves because no one else will give it to them.

Thanks, Ginger, for giving me informing me about this thread!  Pero kay nangahilom naman yata!

I recommend books of Mitch Albom especially the latest one - For One More Day! That book gave me a chance to think of the things I need to do and fix before it's too late.  Mitch Albom can make you cry and laugh at the same time.  I can really relate what's going on in the story especially how we take for granted our mother.

I also recommend the book I am currently reading:  Veronica Decides to Die by Paolo Coelho.  I am a fan of Paolo Coelho but I read the Alchemist a long time ago na and also the Zahir.  Veronica Decides to Die is that latest book I read.  This made me realize that there may be more people inside the mental hospital that's more sane than me.  Also, I learned from this book that at one point, Paolo Coelho, was once institutionalized due to mental problem as perceived medical doctors.

I recommend "The History of Medicine."

The book analyzes the transformation of medicine as a religious art during the post Pleistocenic epoch, to the dogmatic view we have of medicine (thanks to the art and works of Asclepiads, Hippocrates of Cos, Valen, etc). The book explores the move of medicine from the spiritual understanding---to the scientific world view of disease and its vector-system. Its also a humbling book because it shows that medicine, is, a human socially constructed phenomenon. It is the epitome of our species' need to fight and resist nature's laws--a manifestation of Human transcendentalism of the brutality of nature. As time progresses, so too does medicine.

In 1-2 centuries, historians will read about human medicine in the 20th and 21st century and wonder about our 'archaic' system. 'Today's new is tomorrow's old'.

I have just given to Mike the book "They Way of the Shepherd" during our EB last night at Brewpoint. I hope the book will be of big help to him.

I'm sure Mari will be posting the EB photos very soon (if she hasn't done it yet... I left ahead at 12:30 AM this morning... and I'm not sure what time they called it a day).

Who were the others at the EB? Stay tuned....

For those who are interested in the political discourse of Western Europe towards East Asia, primarily the Qing Dynasty of Imperial China during the late 18th century to the early 19th century--as a case study in the evolution of political ramifications during the Age of European Imperialism in the latter half of the 19th century; then I strongly recommend James L Hevia's "Cherishing Men From Afar: Qing Guest Ritual and the Macartney Embassy of 1793". A great read.

Qing? not Xing? Im not a political person but i am interested on how they live before...

It is read in english phonetics as "Ching" (Qing). It was the last Chinese Imperial Dynasty to rule over Zhong Guo (The Middle Kingdom) a.k.a 'China'. I'm sure you would love it, 'te because it includes the court etiquette of the people (women, men, children).

The book is factual--and a great review of Imperial Doctrine---one that was implemented by the Chinese for over 4,000 years.

I just finished reading a rather vivid book entitled "Cry Havoc! The Crooked Road to the Civil War, 1861" written by Nathan D. Lankford. Exciting, battle-oriented, and intrigue.

I highly recommend it for history lovers, political advocates, and any strategists.  ;)

how about danielle steele's Zoya? i know it's a drag. but hey. imagine all your friends and loved ones dead. your home. your status. your richness all gone. that's a pain.

can i post a site here wherein you can download novels for free? hehe :) i know it's piracy. practical lang ;)

haha, kuyawa pood. Isug diay ka Kiams because you have the stomach for these kinds of genre. Do you happen to be Waray-Waray or something? lol ;) ;)

But on a serious note tho, I'll take a look at this because I have *some* free time now; I do recommend a book by Tolstoy named "Anna Karenina" to you. The synopsis is about the plight of the woman during the late 19th century, the rise of feminine feelings during the time of the Russian Revolution. Military love, two lovers, the nation state at risk, the people, the state of religion, etc all are in discourse with one another. And one woman's story is documented. Its beautiful.

A macro-micro view of the human persona during times of strife and one's ability to rise up to the challenge.

Cheers,

Tuesdays with Morrie was a good read and so are his other books For One More Day and Five People You Meet in Heaven.  Speaking of which, Haze, were you able to buy the Tuesdays with Morrie that was on sale in your bookstore?

Graz, I've already read Tuesdays with Morrie. Yes, I was able to buy the book on sale, it's "For One More Day". :)

Bem, I must agree with you. Zoya is a good book.

This week, I'm starting to read a book by Norwegian author Karin Fussom entitled "When the Devil Holds the Candle".

Ah, very nice tastes in genre esp. medical thrillers, wars, terror, action. Do you engage in Tom Clancy books?

I have one question for you, Ms. Kiams. If you don't like love-romance genre, then how do you know about Diane Steele? ;) ;) LOL!

Yes, Tuesdays with Morrie was a great book. That book made me cry waterfalls. Ever read Catcher in the Rhye?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I highly recommend you read a book entitled "The Gods Will Have Blood"
Its political, historical, thriller; based on the late 18th century on the dawn of the French Revolution.

ok fine!, because I started reading "real" novels when I was 13. Mom wanted me to read read and read. ciempre teenager. She recommended Steele''s books cause at least nearer to Sweet Valley High teen novels..  and when I started to like Steele, mom told me to shift to Sheldon na.. then after Sheldon, she told me to go Ludlum.. and so on,.lols..
When lolo noticed my liking in novels. He told me to stick with books that are at the same time informative.  Para dili masayang ako time spent on novels than academic books. lols..So yun.  Med thrillers. Courtroom. war..etc.. I remember I even quote languages. Or infos about history..hehe

Tom Clancy? Politika.  bio Strike.. Net force, power plays etc.. I admit. It was hard to understand the military terms and weapons, lol.

Executive Order; dba he was even questioned for this book after the 9/11 attack. Cause 9/11 happening was similar to this book.
