1. Paradise Lost by John Milton
2. To mortal men, he with his horrid crew
Lay vanquisht, rowling in the fiery Gulfe
Confounded though immortal: But his doom
Reserv'd him to more wrath; for now the thought
Both of lost happiness and lasting pain
Torments him; round he throws his baleful eyes
That witness'd huge affliction and dismay
Mixt with obdurate pride and stedfast hate:
At once as far as Angels kenn he views
The dismal Situation waste and wilde,
A Dungeon horrible, on all sides round
As one great Furnace flam'd, yet from those flames
No light, but rather darkness visible
Serv'd onely to discover sights of woe,
Regions of sorrow, doleful shades, where peace
And rest can never dwell, hope never comes
That comes to all; but torture without end
Still urges, and a fiery Deluge, fed
With ever-burning Sulphur unconsum'd:
Such place Eternal Justice had prepar'd
3. This text places a parallel between the judgment of God to cast out Man from Paradise as well as Lucifer and his legions out of heaven after their failed attempt to usurp the throne of God. In what Lucifer declared to his followers, "I will raise my throne above the stars of God." The legions were cast out of heaven and this particular excerpt describes their torment, their eternal fate and those that follow them. There is strong symbolism in their anguish, as they linger in pain, their hatred increases, instead of humbling themselves after their defeat, they refuse to accept the fact of their fate. Milton, indirectly describes their fate as , "stubbornly inivetible." This particular excerpt illustrates the power and magnificence of God. That he was able to renounce and humble even the greatest of his creations, he explains it perfectly, "Confounded though immortal", the situation Lucifer and his fallen angels were in.
They deny their own fate. In their pride, they still believe they can usurp the throne, that they can still ruin the plans of the Almighty. Alas, but they are wrong. And it is their burning hatred of the Almighty and all of his creations that prevents them from seeing the Truth.
That their existence is but limited, that even immortal Angels, great and small will be punished and judged according to their crimes.
In the End of Times.
