Meeting The Author Bwana R. Mugo Gatheru
« on: August 13, 2008, 07:48:58 AM »
Sometime ago, my husband handed me a book entitled Child of Two Worlds, written by an African, R. Mugo Gatheru. He told me the book was used in school to learn more about the Kikuyu tribe of Kenya.  I got hooked to reading the book and learned a lot.  I noted some similarities of our culture and theirs.  But what drawn me to this book and yes, to the author is his perseverance to succeed, no matter what hurdles he had to go through in achieving his dream.  The Dream of the Warrior, he called it in one of the chapters of the book.  He said something like, education would free his nation from slavery, their nation at that time was being colonized by the British.

The book, Child of Two Worlds, originally published in 1964 in London.

Last Satuday, August 9, I got the chance to meet him.  It was indeed an honor meeting Bwana (Mr. in Swahili) Mugo Gatheru at his residence.  He has been based here in Sacramento and now a retired professor at the California State University where he taught History of Africa and Middle East from 1969 to 2002.  Needless to say, he was such an intelligent man!  We discussed the book Child of Two Worlds and it was fun!  I asked him for an autograph in my book and he graciously did.  Not only that, he gave me two more books!

Gift from the Author.

Before we left, I asked for a picture with him and his vibrant and super nice wife, Dolores.

Interesting book, Ate Ging.

I've read some works by His Eminence, Desmond Tutu of South Africa. The notion of 'UBUNTU' or forgiveness/reconciliation between ethnic South African blacks (Zulu, Swazi etc) with the white Afrikans and British.

Its interesting, its always interesting to read works by peoples during post-independence.

I'll definitely take a look into this book.

I still have to read the works of Mr. Desmond Tutu, Dong.  It must be interesting.  I hope the notion of "ubuntu" also applies to the tribal conflicts especially between the Luo and Kikuyus. (If I am not mistaken, US President Obama's father was a member of the Luo tribe.)

Dong, I suggest you read first the Child of Two Worlds.  I got my old book from Amazon.
