1984 is a novel by George Orwell that was published in 1949. It is a dystopian story that depicts a totalitarian society ruled by the Party, which controls every aspect of people's lives through propaganda, surveillance, censorship, and torture. The novel follows the life of Winston Smith, a low-ranking member of the Party who works in the Ministry of Truth, where he alters historical records to suit the Party's agenda. Winston secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebelling against it, but he is constantly watched by the telescreens and the Thought Police, who can detect any sign of disloyalty or dissent. Winston meets Julia, a young woman who also hates the Party, and they begin a clandestine affair in a rented room above a prole shop. They believe that they are part of a secret underground resistance movement called the Brotherhood, led by Emmanuel Goldstein, the enemy of the Party. However, they are eventually betrayed by O'Brien, a high-ranking member of the Party who pretends to be a rebel. Winston and Julia are captured, tortured, and brainwashed in the Ministry of Love, where they are forced to confess their crimes and betray each other. Winston is taken to Room 101, where he is confronted with his worst fear: rats. He begs O'Brien to do it to Julia instead, thus demonstrating his complete submission to the Party. The novel ends with Winston sitting in a cafe, drinking gin and accepting the Party's lies as truth. He loves Big Brother.

- The role of resistance and rebellion in oppressive societies. The novel portrays Winston and Julia as rebels who try to defy the Party and seek some form of personal happiness and freedom. The novel also introduces the Brotherhood as a possible source of hope and change for the oppressed masses. However, the novel also reveals the futility and danger of rebellion in a society where the Party has absolute power and can crush any opposition. The novel suggests that resistance is possible but not easy or effective in such circumstances.
