Wanted: Juan Dela Cruz

This is another story with a familiar plot yet rarely told – for the very reason of triviality despite its apparent evidence in our society today. This, the very manifestation of the clear boundaries between the rich few and the many poor, is what I call an irrevocable pain, unless challenged by the deprived, underprivileged majority. Of what reasons these obvious class identities exist here in our country, that’s for us to find out. Of why it has proliferated severely, that’s for us to delve deeper.

When I said irrevocable pain, I refer to it as a bitter acceptance of the undeniable fact. The fact that we belong to a society where all institutions are controlled by ruling elites. Where all forms of development are determined by these elites, may it be in our government institutions, in our economy, technology, education, even religion and mass media – though there are always exemptions to the rule.

A one Juan dela Cruz cannot just run for politics because definitely he cannot just defeat Gloria or whoever influential now in our Philippine politics. For one, more than his remarkable credentials, if he doesn’t have that one big factor, that is, if he doesn’t have funds to support his candidacy, then, obviously he has no place in our politics. Another reason, if that Juan dela Cruz is deeply imbibed with his genuine and valued principles, then he might not be able to reach his political aspirations. Now what am I saying? The fact that this is happening right now in our society is an excruciating idea. But it doesn’t of course mean that this awful idea is irreparable. We can always break this notion. If only we all want to. One Juan dela Cruz is qualified to run for a seat in our government. He has noble ideas, sure. But if he’d work by himself, then expect that worst situations continue. But if given that all will be inspired to challenge and change the perspective of politicking in our country, then even without adopting a new system of government in our country today, we can definitely achieve the one true hope of each Filipino, a better Philippines.

I said irrevocable pain because I always hate the notion that all good citizens in our country has turned evil. The idealisms of these ones good had changed by the influence carried by the scornful Gloria and her alter egos. And what’s irritating is the fact that all these “great men” are playing fool around themselves. They exchange and re-shuffle power and position from time to time and that’s what they do all the time. That’s how they do it to maintain their power and influence and pride. I would say that our society is unfair, yes. The status quo is that we have these few elites, “organized minority” bound by one principle that is, domination over their areas. And at the same time, we have this “unorganized majority”, the working class, the poor, who, at any rate, don’t even bother to question such horrible setting. That’s why the rich gets richer everyday and the poor gets poorer. But this doesn’t lead to the idea of giving up and surrendering to this very concept. What we therefore need is not to accept whatever is fed to us by these corrupt influential people who don’t have other goals but personal. We therefore need people like the kind of Juan dela Cruz as I describe it above, who, even with a terrible political situation in our country, still pursue its plan to serve for the nation’s interest. We therefore need someone who feels to the people’s needs and interests. We therefore need one Juan dela Cruz who will lead us to progress…and definitely it’s not Gloria. Never was, never is and never will be.
