Tagbilaran issues last warning for "swertres"

Tagbilaran City (30 July 2005) -- Further strengthening its bid for a "swertres-free" Tagbilaran, city authorities through City Councilor George Olario issued the final warning to all ushers, coordinators and financiers of this illegal numbers game to stop their operations or be dealt in with the full sting of the law.

Speaking during an interview, Olario, Tagbilaran City's revered "Dirty Harry" and City Protective Services Chair issued the final warning to all tentacles in the operation amidst allegations that swertres has proliferated in the towns of Bohol and has covert operations in the city.

In fact, Guindulman Mayor Oriculo Granada admitted swertres operations in Bohol towns months back.

Swertres, an illegal numbers game has lately replaced "masiao" a numbers betting game.

Like masiao, "swertres" uses three number combinations, but unlike it, swertres uses the digits of a legally existing lotto games.

Reports from the towns of Bohol indicate that swertres has masiao operators packing or shifting to the new hip game.

Fearing a setback in its drive against illegal gambling, Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Lim appointed Olario to sit as city illegal gambling czar. This was later confirmed by city police chief Ernesto Agas.

Olario bared that he has called all suspected operators and financiers to a meeting within the week and all of them agreed to stop its operations in the city.

Operators said they skipped Tagbilaran City, however, reports filtered to the police intelligence channels said some bettors are from Tagbilaran City.

This led the local authorities to map out plans to eradicate the bane of gambling which has the tendency to hook its bettors to further aggravating poverty. (PIA)
