SEEKING to douse speculations that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is back on the campaign trail for Charter change, a senior Palace official assured the public that the May 2007 elections would push through; said Gabriel Claudio, President Arroyo’s political adviser.
President Arroyo’s speech at the 40th anniversary of the Asian Development Bank, renewed her call for Charter change, saying it was a "platform commitment" her administration would pursue with “urgency and fervor†and a reality that Filipinos must face.
But Claudio reiterated that Charter change has been a "major component" of the President's reform program.
"But she is neither dictating the means nor timing to achieve it. This is precisely what has to be the subject of a consensus. There will be elections in May. The administration is behind that.â€
"What the President simply wanted to stress was the need for a national consensus on Charter change because it has a reformist purpose of vision towards greater political stability and sustained economic growth through a more responsive form of governance," Claudio said.
