Bishop asked to lead probe on church robs
Published by Bohol Chronicle on February 02, 2003
Bishop Leopoldo Tumulak was formally requested to convince local police officialdom to investigate the unsolved church burglaries in the province.
The request surfaced after seven antique icons were stolen from the Virgen del Villar Church in Corella town last Sunday. (See: related story)
The Corella Church was the first to be victimized by unscrupulous robbers this year. However, the province, known for its several old churches, holds a list of unsolved church burglaries over the years, including the centuries-old Baclayon Church (oldest stone church in the country) which has been burglarized for more than five times.
Church relics have been carted away in all those unsolved church burglaries, thus an honest-to-goodness investigation has to be done.
Msgr. Feliciano Nalzaro, Corella church parish priest, and Isabelo Daquipil, chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC-Corella) led the signatories of the letter request addressed to the bishop.
The concerned Corella residents asked Bishop Tumulak to convene a meeting with top officials in the province, Gov. Erico Aumentado and PNP Prov'l Director Sancho Bernales to discuss solutions to past burglaries and ways to prevent subsequent church burglaries in the province.
They said that until today no suspects are identified or picked up by the police for questioning.
It's about time, we bind our efforts together," the signatories said, "in solving and preventing more church burglaries in the province."
