BCCI says it's hesitant to join the opposition

Tagbilaran City (1 July 2005) -- Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) said the business community here is hesitant to join the calls of the opposition in amassing warm-bodies to initiate another EDSA march, saying that there has been noted a better business climate in the recent months of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Administration.

Speaking over a radio program here June 30, the BCCI head who is in the United States of America in the meantime, said the gains the business sector experienced during the past is just too good to be wasted.

The same basically echoed Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima's call for the Filipinos to remain focused and not lose the economic gains the country achieved in the past months.

Secretary Purisima apparently means the rise in the gross domestic products and the aggressive Administration fight to uproot corruption and run after tax evaders. The Administration also scored a major victory in passing the expanded value added tax (VAT) as a source of funds to finance its second phase of economic reforms.

In related developments, Boholanos are reportedly split in their opinions on the GMA admission of her mental lapse in calling a COMELEC official to during the counting of voted last elections, a radio survey indicated this week.

Boholanos are also split as to the calls for the resignation of the President and for the conduct of snap elections. Aired then were general ideas of letting the rule of law and respect to the Constitution prevail.

With the touchy situation stoked by the Opposition amidst bolched calls for another EDSA, the peso bobbled against the dollar in the international market, a fact that economists ascribe to the Oppositions pushing of Susan Roces' for the Presidency.

This, economists interpret as sending shivers down the back of the elites and the middleclass.

The President is bent on completing the economic and fiscal reforms that she had started no matter what it takes, because this is what the Filipino people expected her to do, Malacanang said in newspaper reports this week.

As a form of restitution of her moral impropriety against her resolve to bring economic reforms to the country, the President also announced radical reforms during a conference with businessmen recently.

One of such, it turned out was distancing his husband, Mike Arroyo, which has evidently become a convenient target for attacks on her. Palace sources also leaked some Cabinet revamp in a bid to streamline Malacanang bureaucracy. (PIA)
