When calamities strike, animals often get neglected. But in Bohol, there's a lot of concern for the tarsiers. The primates, which are endemic to the area, have easily become one of its most popular tourist attractions through the years.
The magnitude 7.2 quake, which hit the Visayas region on October 15, has definitely caused a whole lot of trauma on the fragile creatures. The epicenter of the quake was somewhere near Carmen, Bohol. The roads to the Tarsier Reservation in Corella, Bohol were not damaged, but the frightened tarsiers reportedly went down from the trees and stayed on the ground.

Most of Bohol's tourist-dependent industries lamented the fact that no tourists have come since the quake hit. Church tours and the Loboc River Cruise have been cancelled. The Tarsier Sanctuary also hasn't gotten any visitors, which is just as well since the animals need time to recover.
In honor of Bohol's prized primates, check out some of the facts we gathered from the Philippine Tarsier Foundation Inc., the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, as well as a couple of news articles.
1. The natives of Bohol call tarsiers by several names: "magau," "mamag," "maomag," "malmag," "magatilok-iok," and "mago." A tarsier often measures no more than 100 millimeters, its tail is considerably longer than its body (189 to 293 millimeters for males). The animal uses the tail much like a tripod.
2. Tarsiers are pregnant for six months.

3. The average weight of a newborn tarsier is 23 grams.
4. Tarsiers prefer to be secluded and are very territorial.
5. Tarsiers need a lot of space—at least one hectare per tarsier.
6. Tarsiers are nocturnal and should ideally be not disturbed during day time.
7. A tarsier can turn its head by 180 degrees to nearly 360 degrees. It has to do this because it can't see from the corner of its eyes.
8. They may commit suicide during captivity due to trauma from touching and loud noise.

9. Strangely enough, tarsiers have been recovered in Metro Manila—most likely because they were smuggled to the area. In June, one was found Forbes Park’s Manila Golf and Country Club. Meanwhile, in July, another one was found inside a bag left in a bus in Cubao, Quezon City. Sadly, both tarsiers died while under the care of the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB). They were set to be flown back to Bohol but the trauma of their displacement may have been too much for them to take. Both tarsiers died of heart attacks.
10. Female tarsiers become fertile in April or May.
