Let me share my experience about starting an addiction.
Back in the days when there were still no mibile phones, VHF radio transceivers were the "in" thing. I was still in high school then and I, together with my brother and our neighbor would get our parents VHF at night and do a "radio net", just like the legitimate amateur radio league.
We invented callsigns and locations coming from all over the world. Those checking in would reach to about a hundred and yet, actually, there were only 3 of us. We do this almost every night.
Little did we know that the grown ups (the legitimate members of the amateur radio league) were actually monitoring us and enjoying our antics.
Soon they allowed their children to join our nightly activity over the radio and the group grew up into one huge network of teenagers who "kitkit" the nite away, meeting friends even though they just stayed at home. It was good, clean fun without the risk of getting out at night.
And then, the mobile phones came.
But that is another story...
