Title: Tsunami Alert Aftermath: Candle Making
Post by: islander on March 16, 2011, 01:33:36 PM
well, since i went sleepless for almost 24 hours after that sudden evacuation over the tsunami alert, i got to spend time between tb and candle making.  i'm still in the learning stage of candle making, experimenting much and making mistakes along the way.  as long as i don't burn myself, i must say it is a worthwhile hobby.

the "cooking" implements:

feeling chemist kunohay ko, ajeje.

the molds:

making do with what are in the kitchen, i.e. empty bottles, ice cube trays, empty sausage cans as long as these are made of aluminum, and recycled votive candle containers.

the results:

p.s. they smell sweet because i mix in oil-based scents much more than what is mixed in commercial scented candles.

those small things without wicks were molded from ice cube trays.  they serve as candle decors.

a sample of a candle decorated with little "wickless" candles molded from ice cube trays.  it's a palm tree and the sun, red on red (muted, so to speak).  i figured it would be too garish to have too many colors in one candle, especially if the candle is not massive.

samples of recycled votive candle containers, an aluminum sausage can, and a jam bottle (covered to maximize the scent) .  i can use these over and over.  (note the uneven toppings of the votive candles.  i still have to practice pouring and proper timing.)

christmas ball candles (the mold here is rubbery, the specific term of which i forgot).  the toppings are still uneven.  i hope to perfect these in the coming days.

my floating candles.  they're a beauty and easier to make (because of the ready-made molds).  pouring is my only problem here because they're so delicate.  practice, islander, practice.

designs:  hibiscus, lotus, daisy, butterfly (the heart and star are molded from an ice cube tray)

carrots in a basket design (thanks to the mold).  i don't intend to have more of this except for one more try just to find out if i could do it better.  i wouldn't want to light this kind of candle and see it melt.

napungil ang basket sa ubos kay wa koy alamag nga apil diay sa design mao nga wa nako maapil ug bubo.

surprise!  here are candles molded in a 1-liter milk tetrapack and a disposable food container.  they happen to have the colors of fr chic's favorite football team.

morag tagalog pastry nga gitawag ug sapin-sapin.  the bigger candle had molten paraffin poured over ice cubes to achieve an antique effect.  result:  morag swiss cheese tungod sa buslot-buslot.

There are high quality paraffins to make your candle in better quality, I mean if you make a deco candles. Kon sa Pinas kini dili magdugay ang imong kandila angin sa sobrang init.

thanks for the tips.  what i'm doing now is mixing 75% candle paraffin and 25% beeswax, mix in a dash of hardener, luster crystals, oil-based coloring and oil-based scents, put in the ref for 30 minutes, and voila, i have a candle that won't melt in any weather (thanks to the hardening additive), except of course when the wick is lighted.

i will continue to experiment so i could eventually come up with what i may like best.  so far, there are designs that i won't bother about again, like the big one that uses ice cubes in the mold.  it's weak and cumbersome.  :)

Very nice design, Islander. I have a friend in Thailand who makes candles as a hobby. Now she is exporting candles to Europe and America. Candles make her a millionaire.

thanks, tb.com.  that's very encouraging even if this early selling is beyond me.  so far i've given some of my candles to a few friends (these are such great gifts).  now they want to know the how-to.  in two weeks' time i'll be doing a demo.
