What's your Boy Scout/Girl Scout experience? Here's mine
« on: August 09, 2008, 02:25:00 AM »

It was the Summer of 1985 and I was one of those who underwent a special training to qualify for the Scout Citizen Award (now reverted to its old pre-war title of Eagle Scout). We spent a week at the Pres. Roxas Park in Garcia-Hernandez where our proficiencies in knot tying, morse coding, first aiding, map reading, mountaineering and other camping skills were tested.

Then came the day which I hoped would never come. The test for swimming. Swimming is not really my forte.  Days before the scheduled camp, I tried to improve my swimming skills at the Family Beach in Booy, about 300 meters further from Cainget Beach. I had no coach or trainer. It was just me, my brother, and a few childhood neighbors.

The swimming test was set in the early morning. We were called out from our tents and we rushed out to assemble as one platoon. We stripped to our waste and marched towards the swimming pool. The instructions were given: Each of us, set by batches, will have to swim to the other end of the pool and make it back to the starting line.

The morning air was chilly. My name was called with the other scouts whose turn was next. We positioned ourselves at the edge of the pool. At the blow of the whistle, we dove into the water. The chill tore into my bones like a hundred jagged knives. I broke into the surface and gasped for air. I kicked my legs furiously to keep myself afloat. I started losing what little confidence I had in me. I lunged my right arm forward and then my left. I kept the rhythm and willed myself to go on but the coldness of the water soon became unbearable. I was already halfway through when my arms started to weaken and my legs were failing me. I kicked and paddled but I only found myself getting below the surface instead of moving forward. I tried to gasp for air but sucked in water. I was going down and starting to drown.

Were it not for a pole that Blair Panong held out to me, I might not be making this post right now.

I was in Grade-lll then in March 1973, when I first joint the scouting Jamboree in Guindulman. My adviser is Mrs. Bitancor, I was her favorite pupil. She asked me to be the Scout Leader, I was so excited that I memorized all kinds of knot from overhand to the most complicated double eight knot.
We won most of the games that we participated.

After were dismissed, most of the boys rush to the Pier, to take a bath. Kini laging tagabukid ta, ilahas kaayo sa dagat. Didto nagdive dive  na ahong kauban. Sige nila kog aghat nga maligo pod. That time wa pa ko kasulay ug langoy.

Pirting kuyawa god naho. Niuna gyud kog uli wa ko pahibalo sa akong Mamang nga nakaligo na kog dagat. Hapit pa malumos.

Sukad adto ni promised kos akong kaugalingon nga makat-on ug langoy.

That whole summer, everyday tua gyud kos sapa ga langoy-langoy.

I was in grade six when the HSS and UB decided to conduct a joint Jamboree at the former Magsaysay Camp now Raja Sikatuna National Park. Our scoutmaster was Mr. Pedro Marcojos and UB's scoutmaster was Mr. Dinsay. There were a total of 5 platoons all aboard 3 MB Liner (the old one colored dark brown with right side fully open). The memories are so vivid that I can hear the chanting of the kids.

As a kid, I could not contain the exitement that I could jump six feet for joy.

The activities were diffrent kinds of contests like chanting, drills, knot tying, field games, tent making, fire making, etc. Of course we have to cook our own food, which consist mainly of canned goods.

Night fell and there was the traditional camp fire in the middle of the forested surrounding that warmed the cold night. Bilar is like the temperature of Baguio due to its thick forest and high altitude. UB had a presentation of an Indonesian song "Disini Sinang" and we have that hiking song "We're on the upward trail" and some drama. We could barely sleep that night when the air is full of strange sounds from nucturnal creatures. You can hear the howls of lemurs and night owls that initated a horror story, and there were the loud pala-otots that broke the silence.

The next day, our activity was swiming at the cold spring water. The water was ice cold as it comes from the mountains. Then there was trail hiking inside the forest. We hike into the forest following a trail of sticks and scouting signs. Then there was simaphore signaling. Then hiden message finding (like treasure hunting) with given maps.

Next day is packing up day. Our causin came to see me as their house is just nearby. Then there was an old lady who sells native bibinka or rice cake. It was brown in color and very tasty. The size is around 12 inch in diameter with banana leaves as lining. I bought 3 and my mother was delighted as she told it is a special and baked from a native oven with coconut husk as fuel.

When we get back to the city, the truck driver could not bear our noise.

Mr. Raldampong, did you go to the World Jamboree to Japan? I know that my father went there, part of a 4 Boholano team to represent the island. He showed us pictures of him when he was in Mt. Fuji, Tokyo, and fellow scouts from around the world.

Rather captivating to see so many scouts. I salute all you Scouts!

No Bran, even in World Jamboree in Mt. Makiling in Laguna, I did not make it because I was too small. Money is a problem too. But I love Scouting.

Your Dad is lucky, to be one of the four Boys Scout to represent Bohol. The experienced is unforgettable.

I remember the motto" Always be Prepared"

When I was a high school freshman at UB, we attended a Provincial Jamboree at Doljo Beach, Panglao, Bohol. There was a big turn out of boy scouts (elementary and high school) from every town and city. Many exciting events were lined up for the event. In the morning of the second day, a huge Japanese cruise liner anchored offshore. Moments later, about a dozen motorized boats were deployed from the ship and headed for shore. The boats weren't able to come near the shore because the water in Doljo is very shallow.

This was long before the tourism boom in Bohol. Then, as if on cue, about fifty meters away from the shoreline, the boat passengers disembarked... and what we saw were about a hundred Japanese tourists in two-piece bikinis and swimming trunks, young and old, walking from the boat towards the shore. They frolicked on the beach, they sunbathed, played games... and I can still clearly remember an elderly Japanese painting the scene with water colors.

All the boy scouts and scout masters stood idly and enjoyed the scene which was perhaps a first time experience for most of those who were there.

No scouting event lined up for that day took place. Calls from the camp master to assemble were ignored. We were all glued at the beach scene the whole day.

By sunset, one of the Japanese motor boats ran aground as it was ferrying the last batch of frolickers back to the cruise ship. The tide was too low. The crew had to spend the night in the boat. They were able to get back to the ship only the following morning when the tide was high enough for the boat to navigate.

It must have been a grande experience being a scout, wasn't it, Mr. Rald? I always wanted to join the scouts, but there are no local scouts where we lived when we were still children.

Definitely something that I would want my children to be enrolled in when they come of age.
