Open letter to Mr. Willie Revillame
« on: October 13, 2008, 04:16:23 PM »
An Open Letter to Mr. Willie Revillame

Lately, I been watching delayed telecast of Wowowee not by choice but it’s the only show available on TFC here in Saudi Arabia during 7:45 PM to 10 PM slot.

I have noticed your rudeness to the show's dancer and staff. Though most of your side comments (I supposed) are for the sake of humor. However, degrading a person in front of national and international audiences is no laughing matter.

Your arrogance and rudeness are not only confined to your staff but also extended even to the hapless game participants. Participant's way of pronouncing words (especially those with 'thick' accent like people from Visayas) can eventually be the show's instant joke – but in bad taste. Promoting "enjoyable show" at the expense of these hapless people is totally irresponsible and unacceptable. Remember that these marginalized people, dying to be picked as studio contestants (and sometimes literally ‘dying’) are there in your show simply for obvious reason – financial necessity. And I hope this reality will not be considered as an outright license to belittle people.

I'm not a fan of your rival noon time show or advocating any show for that matter but I would like to remind you, Mr. Revillame of your infamous beginnings prior to your fame status now. You were just one of the "HAWI BOYS" of Randy Santiago and also an unknown drummer of a totally unknown band. I hope you will consider these humble beginnings of yours so that you will not look down at ordinary people. Your hosting 'gaga' at times using English, riddled with so many grammatical errors and faulty diction, may somehow reminds you that you are 'funnier' than the hapless people you toyed around in your show. You are really such a comedian - hats off to you.

Lastly, consider this as unsolicited advice for a famous person like you. These hapless people that you ridiculed while ‘on top’ will also be the same people you will meet when you go down. I just hope that you mend your ways before it’s too late for you may wake up one time while at sleep and you may find that you are in your worst nightmare.

I agree, sadly but true. No wander why other countries look little on us. Have you heard the news , BBC is not aplogetic to the way how the network discriminated a filipina maid?
For them its nothing but a freedom of expression. For me what freedom is this that enjoy if this meant to belittle somebody who is not capable of depending themselves. This is nothing but a poor slopsticks for people with poor taste of sense of humor.

From Wikipedia

Suspensions

In August 1999, Randy, John and Willie were suspended by ABS-CBN from Magandang Tanghali Bayan because of the vulgar jokes that they threw at the contestants during the show's portion Calendar Girl. The suspension was meted after MTRCB, then headed by Armida Siguion-Reyna, issued a warning on ABS-CBN regarding MTB. A week later, the whole noontime show was suspended and was replaced temporarily by Esep-Esep.

In 2001, Willie was terminated from Magandang Tanghali Bayan after he defied orders from ABS-CBN management to refrain from making vulgar jokes. He was replaced in the show by the matinee-idol triumvirate of Marvin Agustin, Dominic Ochoa and Rico Yan (now deceased). Soon after, he started appearing as guest star in some GMA 7 shows, fuelling speculations that he will soon be transferring to ABS-CBN's rival network. But after guesting at GMA 7, there was no news coming from Willie's camp except for his appearance during an EDSA 3 rally.

When Magandang Tanghali Bayan went off air, it made a comeback with a different title Masayang Tanghali Bayan with almost the same group, plus new hosts. Then in December 2003, the MTRCB ordered ABS-CBN to terminate Willie from the show, when he remarked nasty jokes with Masayang Tanghali Bayan mainstay Mahal, but before the order could be carried out, the host-comedian filed his resignation instead. In January 2004, Willie appeared on ABS-CBN's The Buzz and made a tearful farewell appearance.

Annulment case

On July 16, 2007, Revillame was charged before a Quezon City court (Criminal Case No. Q-07-147787) for allegedly abusing his estranged wife, Floralice "Liz" Almoro. Prosecutor Gibson Araulla Jr. recommended P 12,000 bail after he found that Revillame violated Section 5, RA 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act. Almoro alleged that Revillame a) humiliated and shouted at her while he was holding their baby boy, b) that sometime May 2006, he allegedly tried to hit her with a chair and throw the remote control and that c) he had "dirty sexual affairs'" with different women. In his counter-affidavit, Revillame denied the charges claiming that he had difficulty performing his duty as husband allegedly because of Almoro’s explosive moods and hurtful tirades.[1]

While his Wowowee co-host Janelle Jamer stated that she was never pregnant by by Revillame, since there were rumours that she was slim due to an alleged abortion.

Given all that history, I just wander why ABS-CBN signed him for job hosting. Isn't it because vulgar, green jokes and double-meaning punchlines sells?

whatever is appealing to the majority sells even if the minority is hurt. ABS-CBN is business so whatever project that seems to be a money maker to them that's a hit.

I saw one reality show in the US where contestants are dared to eat different kinds of insects like spiders or cockroach or raw genitals of cow, etc. in exchange for US visa. Most of the contestants were Mexicans and some Chinese who want to become US citizens. Such shows in the US have high ratings.

Such is unethical and whoever enjoys such show is a sick person.

It is no different from watching in Roman arenas where followers of Christ battles with lions.

whatever is shown in wowowee passed the MTRCB boards taste led by consoliza la guardia. i think willie and the rest of the production of wowowee has been reprimanded several times already. so there's no point of concern for the masses since they continued to patronize the show not only in the philippines but also in other parts of the globe like the US. in the US, i've heard they are charging entrance fees for the viewers.

TV sexes it up again

By Nestor Torre
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 00:03:00 11/25/2008

MANILA, Philippines—Television is largely supposed to be a “GP” (General Patronage) medium, because it enters people’s homes at all hours of the day, and thus exposes minors to its program content.

Thus, standards for TV programming are stricter than those for the movies, since minors’ access to films can be regulated at movie houses.

Trouble is, sex sells, so some TV people want to get in on the profitable action, even if it’s verboten to them. That’s why, on local noontime variety shows, dancers gyrate seductively in wee bikinis, in full view of children.

Outraged parents and educators complain vociferously about this, prompting the MTRCB to rap erring producers and directors on their knuckles—and, for a time, the dancers were forced to wear more clothing and gyrate less.

But the proper behavior doesn’t last. After toeing the MTRCB’s line for a few months, the shows up their sex ante once more, resulting in another round of outrage, protest, penalties, toeing the line, etc.

Rigodon

This recidivist rigodon is so pervasive that parents and educators can’t be blamed for being outraged—and for not trusting some TV people to do responsible work and protect young viewers from the excesses of the television trade.

Perhaps the MTRCB can knock more sense or dread in erring TV people’s noggins if it similarly ups the ante in terms of the penalties it imposes on those who break the rules.

Aside from sexy noontime shows, other exponents of randy talk and/or behavior on the boob tube are some “for the boys” sitcoms, talk shows, rock music programs and so-called “fashion” spectacles.

These programs purport to provide entertainment or information, but it’s obvious that they’re really playing it sexy for titillation and increased ratings’ sakes.

Who’s fooling whom? Dear erring TV people, televiewers are smarter than you think, so it’s you who are wearing the dunce caps.

Unfortunately, some excessively sexy TV shows are able to do their worst because local viewers tend to be more apathetic than televiewers abroad.
In addition, we tend to be proactive in protecting our children from unsavory TV content, because we think it’s generally “harmless.” It’s “just TV,” after all.

Wrong. Precisely because television works so subtly on viewers’ attitudes and perception, its power to affect us subconsciously is all the more intense.

If the erring TV people don’t exercise self-restraint, we’ll zero in on those new and “hotter” programs, because our young viewers’ sensibilities have once again been put at risk.

these are very nice inputs my friend. but i think it's a common genre for variety shows these days. you can also watch eat bulaga, you can also see how they mocked and ridiculed their contestants that appeared to be a joke in disguise. some sensitive people look it the same way you perceived it. others look it otherwise and others find it amusing. try to watch the 2 shows and compare who's the bulliest of them all, willie revillame's show wowowee or tito, vic and joey's eat bulaga. what i believe though is what they are doing is within the bounds of MTCRB rules since I heard several times that the hosts are reprimanded or even suspended when they were found to be out of limits already during the airing of the show and i am certain the producers are also looking at it. they should know that most of us filipinos are ultra sensitive when it comes to morality.

I watch Eat Bulaga almost every day and I oppose what you said about EB's mockery against their contestants.  Tito, Vic, Joey along with other hosts treat their contestants well enough and I can see the respect they bestow upon them. I am not biased I like wowowee because it gives poor people the chance to shine in the limelight even for just a little time. Their talents are shown and shared for the whole world to see and as a televiewer, I am amused and entertained to say the least.

I agree with your observation. Though Joey, known for his "double-meaning' linggo, I don't remember seeing him demeaning contestants esp. women, unlike Willie, who most of the time caught staring at lady contestant's breast during interview portion in one of the show's segment. He could just have reserve it off-camera para di naman masyadong garapal ang kamanyakan niya.

Mr. Revillame,

Another incident showing how ill-mannered you are. Blinded by your fame and fortune and think of nothing but yourself regardless of circumstance. No amount of apology nor tears can convince me that you are sensitive to the feelings of others. I'm used to your corocodile tears for I have seen it even after the ULTRA tragedy. If I were you, just keep your mouth shut and for heaven's sake, don't apologize for your mistake if you are about to do it again.

Willie Revillame apologizes for Cory remark

By Marinel Cruz
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 22:38:00 08/05/2009

Filed Under: Cory Aquino, Television, Entertainment (general)

MANILA, Philippines—Controversial noontime TV show host Willie Revillame found himself in the hot seat again on Monday, beset by furious comments from bloggers and social networking websites. The reason: He objected, on air, to the insertion of a video of former President Corazon Aquino’s cortege on his show, “Wowowee.”

“It’s the most insensitive thing I heard today,” read a comment posted on Facebook. “Iba ka talaga Willie. Kakaibang paggalang kay Cory ’yan,” said another.

“He should raise the issue behind the scenes ... but I guess that’s too much to ask [of someone] who hurts women, exploits poor people’s stories ...,” another Revillame detractor said.

On Tuesday, Revillame apologized to his viewers, to the Aquino family and to the network (ABS-CBN) management “for hurting their feelings.” He added that his request to stop the inserted video was really “a sign of love and respect for Tita Cory.”

“Salamat, President Cory,” which aired on Monday, was the special coverage of the transfer of Aquino’s remains from the La Salle Green Hills gym in Mandaluyong City to the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros.

The TV special was cut shortly after the cortege reached the Ninoy Aquino Shrine in Makati City, to give way to the live telecast of “Wowowee.” When the noontime show started airing, ABS-CBN inserted a portion of the Aquino cortege.

During the show’s “Willie of Fortune” segment, Revillame said: “’Di po maganda. Nagsasaya kami dito habang nagluluksa ang sambayanang Pilipino. ’Di ko magagampanan ang pagpapatawa habang ipinapakita ang libing ng dating presidente.” (“It’s not good for us to have fun here while the whole country grieves. I cannot make people laugh at the same time that this part of the funeral of our former president is being shown.”)

When Revillame’s reaction found its way to YouTube, it was met with a huge wave of negative reactions.

On Tuesday, Revillame explained: “Ang feeling ko hindi magandang ipinapakita ‘yon habang kami’y nagsasaya. ’Wag kayong magagalit sa akin ... ” He said he was willing to give way to the airing of the TV special, but that his bosses instructed him to do the show live.

Prior to asking to have the inserted video removed, Revillame said, he had made the same appeal to Entertainment Production head Linggit Tan during a commercial break: “When it was showed again, that’s when I reacted.”

Inquirer Entertainment tried to reach Tan for a reaction, but she declined to comment.

How insensitive this Willie guy is!  The coverage for Tita Cory's burial is more important to most people in the Philippines.  Yes, how could you be happy making fun of toothless and poor people while the country is mourning and paying respect for the mother of democracy in our country!
