Governance 101
'No Lockdown for Dreams!'
At the start of the 2-day workshop on the crafting of the master plan for the development of Olutanga Island yesterday, I shared with the participants, including the mayors of the three towns in the island, my perspectives on governance and community building.
I am what some may call a "maverick" and a "non-conformist" to the traditional way of top to bottom governance.
In my opening statement, I urged the local leaders to think beyond the traditional mindset of governance and challenged them to build a virtual house from the fears, dreams, hopes and aspirations of their people.
I urged them to simplify governance by identifying the most basic needs of their people and addressing these using effectively the resources of government.
Most of all, I encouraged them to dream big because there is no limit to dreaming and there are no lockdowns for dreams.
The role of the agency which I head, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) is to weave their dreams into a workable strategy to address poverty, boost productivity and achieve peace in their communities.
