My Lost Relatives in the US (Ferniz Family Genealogy)
« on: November 10, 2008, 06:55:51 PM »
Proem:
1. It is a fact that among the first Filipinos who migrated to the US during 1800's were the Ferniz family of Mansasa, Tagbilaran, Bohol.

2. I remembered vividly during my childhood years that our relatives from the US visited our home in Tagbilaran, Bohol. They were some of our lost relatives whom my father met during the late 50's & early 60's when he was working in the US. I was grade five at that time and thier visit was a month after the Tagbilaran Fiesta (maybe June 1978 or 1979). They were the newly wed couple ELEANOR ALBA and GERALD FLAHERTY. Four years passed and I was in 3rd year high school, AGNES FERNIZ ALBA (Eleanor's mother) visited us with some friends. That was maybe July. Agnes doesn't look like filipino as her mother was half Irish, but surprisingly, Eleanor her daughter looks more Filipino, with profile like Gloria Diaz.

Then, when I was in 1st year college, a biographer working for the US government named Marina Morales came to Bohol to investigate and document about lineage/roots of early Fil-Am communities. Since she came without a guide, she inquired from the Catholic Women’s League about Ferniz family in Bohol, hoping to find some information from baptismal records. Luckily, the parents of my best friend Crispin Penaso Jr. were active lay-ministers at St. Joseph's Cathedral. They immediately brought Mrs. Morales to our home and I remembered it was one early morning. She interviewed my father who had substantial knowledge of our lineage.

As an adult, every memory came back in pieces. I was curious and it became my passion to dig deeper. Through word by mouth, and research, I found the following data.

Though still having gaps, I hope I could complete this research through this beautiful site “Tubag Bohol” and through your help my dear friends (living in the US):

Daghang salamat Grace. I am sure nga ang younger generation ani nila wala nay idea kung unsa ilang roots. Perhaps some of them don't even know that a place called Bohol exists.

Ang nakalista, up to 5th generation lang. Siguro kung mo bakasyon ni sila tanan sa Bohol, ug mo apil ang mga bag-on tubo, mapuno ang usa ka Gym or grand stand sa kadaghan.

Mr. Ferniz,

I want to tell you that I have an acquaintance here in medical school, of the surname Ferniz. She is not Filipina, however, but is Argentinian. When I met her I was astonished to know she is a Ferniz, as I knew that you were also of the Ferniz family.

Perhaps, sir, you have a common Spanish ancestor?
