Medical Clinical Fair
« on: April 25, 2009, 03:59:38 AM »
I am so excited for next semester. We received news that those of us who were accepted into AMSA (American Medical Students Association) will take part in the annual Medical Fair Mission, where open our campus to free medical check ups to underpriviledged people, and community.

Excited ko. They asked us to bring back BMI machines, gloves, vitamins, patches, BP machine, XRAY machine etc. etc.

Excited kaayo ko with my batch mates. Because the 2nd and 3rd years will take priority. Next semester, will begin our 2nd year of Medicine.

At the same time I can't help but feel nervous because we will not only be expected to make diagnosis, but prognosis as well and recommendation on drug therapy. the 4th years will supervise, and the medical instructors will come by from time to time to check up.

I'm taking a summer review course to teach about EKG training ug phlebotomy diagnostics, as we will be expected to perform blood analysis as well next sem.

I feel like a child in a toy store.

That is the thing we are still planning 'te, mostly man ni medical check ups, history taking, wound care. We are also collaborating with a local dental school and they are providing basic oral check up. We are now going to have spring break, so we are tryin to bring some supplies back for the health fare.

The school is providing basic equipment: stets, bmi machines, tents, drinks, but we are asked to bring back gloves, coats, bandages, ethanol, iodine, masks, candy, fruits, lolly pops, drinks (for the people who will be waiting).

I think they are trying to plan something child-oriented for the kids that will come with parents. But that is to be planned still. Our health fair will start June-July time line.

Instead of going back home for spring break, I'm taking summer classes to learn phlebotomy and EKG class.

The medical schools and nursing schools in the Philippines are second to none.
My mom graduated from CIM nursing and the kinds of things they were exposed to, the nursing students in the 'states aren't even exposed to.

Some nursing students/ nurses in the Phils are even doing surgery, and or delivering babies by themselves.

My mom served as a municipal Public Nurse in Valencia for 2 years and she was sent to the barangays to deliver children, sometimes galing, there were no doctors to deliver, the nurse had to deliver, minor surgery etc.

That is why when the Filipino nurse comes to the 'states, she or he outperforms the American-trained nurse. Because they were already exposed to cases that we dont have in the 'states.

Cases like Kwashiorkor, Cushing's Disease, Addison's Disease, Elephantitis, Malaria, Dengue etc (all these kinds of diseases don't exist in the 'states or canada).

sakit! did they use scalpel, 'te? or did they use a german cut?

The pediatrician that circumcised used a german style cut on me as a child. Even with the analgesic, I could still feel the pain. The worst was when he was sewing it.

Its better they put the child to sleep than let him experience the pain.

Thinking about it in retrospect, its amazing how medicine has progressed in the last 3-4 decades. In my childhood of my grandfather, there was no such thing as hospital-based circumcision. My lolo's father circumcised him. my great lolo had my lolo ciano take some kind of balibas and chew it, then was told to look away. My lolo was circumcised with a sharp sundang, after the cut, he took the balibas out of his mouth and placed it on the wound.

Then went to the dagat to swim it off.

Simple, herbal.

The NaCl (salt) of the water has strong ph, that kills bacteria and allows the wound to heal fast.

I didn't know what they used, Dong.  I wasn't looking.  When they asked me to help hold the kid while they butcher his hoten, I didn't look.  I can't bear to see the pain in his face.

Speaking of circumcision, in that book written by the African Auther, Mr. Mugo Gatheru, it discussed there about the pride of being circumcised.  It also says that it's an honor for a young man to be circumcised and that no tears should be shed or any show of fear or emotions otherwise you will be deemed not worthy to be called a man.

Tomorrow the Medical Fair will be held!
Today is the 28th of November!

I will be in Station 1, as I am assigned to the Vitals Assessment Group.
There will be 15 of us in the Vitals 1 Group.

My request lang is that you pray for this Medical Health Fair, as well as for us medical students, and to pray for me as well. May we be able to treat enough patients tomorrow. For the benefit of their health and to complete The Lord's Pleasing and Pleasing Will.

Please pray for us, friends, brothers and sisters. Pray for me tomorrow. Pray for the patients who are coming to us in need of health care, and pray that we will have enough medication and resources to distribute.

Thank you so much, guys.
This means alot to me and to my group.

God Bless You All.

Best,
Lorenzo Lucino,
SJSM College of Medicine Class of 2012
2nd Year Medical Student {M.D & Ph.D candidate}
