Title: I buy a UPS
Post by: Ligalig-Mike on June 05, 2007, 08:00:09 PM
Lately, power connection in our campus has not been that stable because of intermittent onslaught of strong rain and wind. Unlike in Bohol, the place where I live in is but a vast expanse of rice fields, and anywhere you turn you couldn't spot any shadow of hills or mountains.

My laptop has been stripped of its built-in battery as it was already unreliable. If I use the battery, I couldn't use the keyboard.

I don't know why.

Had I known that it was the battery that prevented me from logging onto the computer, I would have not reinstalled Windows. Reinstalling Windows is a pain. All your installed programs and files have to be removed or transferred to another storage disk before the reinstallation procedure takes place.

Now every time there is power blackout, my laptop succumbs to total darkness, too. With the battery, you can still save your work, then shut  your notebook down. Without the battery, you are helpless when you want to salvage your work. And the worst scenario that could happen in your computer is that, because of the sudden death of the operating system, your computer may give up its last breath. And you will cry the whole day. And only your would-be wife in New York would console your digitally bruised heart. Who else?

I don't want that to happen. I have be in touch with a lot of people from around the world 18 hours a day without interruption. I have web clients who would request me to do this, to do that in the websites I made for them. And what will happen to Tubag Bohol if my laptop departs from me? Poor Mike, I don't have money to buy a new computer. There are bills to be paid. Tubag Bohol server is one.

Will I buy a new battery? Or will I buy a UPS? Uninterruptible Power Supply. I was wrong. I thought the meaning was Universal Power Saver.

I chose the second option. Did I make the right decision?

I never knew that a UPS can be very heavy. I had to transport it from Bangkok to a Thai province where I am based.

Anyway, I am no longer afraid of brownouts. But there was one thing that had terrified me always. I was running out of storage space in my harddisk.

That concern was addressed last Sunday. I also bought a 120-gigabyte external harddrive, in addition to the UPS. I can now keep more Tubag Bohol materials outside my notebook. I spent 5,500 baht plus for these two important support gadgets.

When/If I can save money next month, I plan to buy a digital camera. I really felt bad that when I visited our province last April this year, after a year of ubiquitous silence, I had no camera with me. I could have taken thousands of images during my seven-day whirlwind stay in our province. My mind was still pregnant of Tubag Bohol concept at the time.

What else will I buy? Milk and tea - to keep me awake as I monitor the journey of Tubag Bohol.
