Growing a beard (steps)
« on: November 22, 2008, 04:07:28 PM »
Alas,

I've decided to forgo the shaven look, and have decided to take up a beard. Many of my colleagues adorn a beard on their face, so, since Providence Almighty, has provided me the genetics of hair, I will make use of it. And shall grow it. This will be my first try in growing a full beard. I will document it here.

This is just an experiment, mind you. Feel free to give me your comments and advice.

Sir Layman,

Perhaps we can start a beard-growing trend in here, haha. No but seriously, my beard is only in the early stages; as I haven't shaved  since last week. I do trim the upper and lower edges to keep it organized.

I realize how much a man can become enthralled and grow attached to his beard. I've had my beard now for a little over 2 weeks, and I've already developed techniques in combing a beard as well as stroking the beard when one thinks, lol.

I had my hair trimmed, but chose to keep the beard and requested my barber 'mold' the height of my hair to the height of my beard's growth. And I am satisfied with his work. It has its own appeal, me-thinks.

Observationally,

I've noticed that I have patches of red hair on my beard. Large amount of patches on the border of the angle of the mandible, and more so in the chin and mustache line.
I was curious if this is a normal thing and if many other Filipino men have red or brown patches of hair in their facial hair?

Or is this some kind of recessive trait, down in the gene pool?

For those who trim their beard, I realized it best to evade in using a shave as it can lead to excess trimming. I recommend using a scissor and comb to trim, and if you need to clean of the sides, I recommend using an old barber bladed shave.

Go slow and go smooth on the edges, just trust your fingers to clean the trough.

Yours,

Dear Bran,

You look really great with a beard, mature looking. Keep on posting the developments, I think it  enhances your  sex appeal.

Thank you, Tita, haha my friends also told me that I look better with a beard.
I think it makes me look older, bitaw, which I like.

I was just surprised to see patches of red hair on my chin hair and on my side as I never noticed this before.

Curious lang ko if other Pinoy guys had this same thing too.

Growth thus far,

I'm thinking about letting the whole thing grow. Just had a question for you guys, should I keep the attachment thin or thick? My one friend told me to let the attachments grow and not clean it.

I dunno, what say you?

I'm loving this beard tho, my friend. One can get really attached to the beard. It becomes part of you.

Lorenzo,

You will soon look like the Templar Knights of old. Di ba they grow their beard but shave their head (although I'm not sure you will go to this extreme)  ;D

Beard... they grow on you.

These lump of hair in my armpits. Can I call them beard  ;D

If I did that, I'd get the stares. hahahaha.

My classmate joked around with me, "Lorenzo, you'll be targeted for 'random' checks in the airport terminal"

hahahaha. :P

A colleague of mine, who is also growing a beard, has introduced to me the 'trim' technique.
Growing a beard, indeed, is time consuming process. One must continually trim the sides in order to keep it looking 'crisp' and 'clean'.

I have developed a close relationship with my beard. Truly, a beard is what makes a man.

Growth thus far,

Growth thus far (4 weeks of growth).

Note that I did trim the sides, and clean up some of the excess growth.
I maintained a groomed beard, albeit the fact that its growth had to be continuously checked.
Alas, Providence provided me with the genetic gifts of Hair and its growth. lol.

lol!

I think the beard makes me look more Spanish looking. Whenever I went to the mall and or stores with colleagues. We went to a Cologne Afficionado a couple of days ago and the server talked to me in Spanish, the lady thought I was Colombian. And when I told her I was Filipino, she did not believe, lol.

Ladies love the rugged-scruffy look, I think.

It gives a man a sophisticated, mature yet reserved look. Which is what I'm vying for.

That bearded look is not sophisticating, it is actually a rugged look which makes a woman weak. It is like this fantasy of a weak woman and here comes the man and sweeps you in his strong arms and rugged looks. Wow, this is good for young girls only.

During my younger years  (kining akong lawas mo ovulate pa), if i smell a sweaty body of a man it turns me on so much that I get wet. During sex I love the smell of the armpit and all those natural odors of the body and the salty taste.  Men don´t worry about those expensive men´s cologne or after shave. It doesn´t serve its purpose of attracting the opposite gender.
Kining tiguwang na ta mokanta na lang ko ug "Memories".

haha, the natural scent of a man. For me, a woman does not even need to wear perfume. The eye of a woman, her eyelashes, and the movement of her lips is enough to capture my attention.

Man and Woman complement each other. Two separate pieces, but when combined. Equates as One.

I salute a fellow beard-grower.

One thing that I don't like about a beard is that we have to continuously shave the sides. If I don't my facial cheeks would also be filled with hair. I find it hard to trim as the beard grows. It is good to have a friend who can help shave and trim for you at least twice a week.

Combing a beard is a necessary ritual. If we do not, then it will look ungraceful.

Do you sport a beard right now?

It is time to start anew As Christ is Born this day. :)

I will re-grow my beard. It feels different sporting no facial hair; feels like I am holding back the natural. Let the beard grow!

Join me, my fellow Boholano brothers.

The Beard Trend
« Reply #54 on: April 14, 2010, 03:51:41 AM »
As of late, the new fashion trend as I notice amongst men in my generation is the growing of beards. If one cannot grow a beard, sporting a goatie, or a mustache is applicable. However, I have noticed that the new fashion trend for those in the 20s and even early 30s is the Beard Trend.

The last time I sported a beard, it was not fashioned to my liking as I had hoped. With experience from my last experience, I hope to fashion and hold a beard that is more resemblant to that of Gerard Butler's. Very fashionable, i must say.

So let the beard-growing commence.

I like this one by Jake Gyllenhaal. Notice how he grew his beard; thin on the sides, but on the lower and upper lip regions, was allowed to grow thick. Note the reddish brown streaks on the beard. Excellent growth.

From the looks of this one, this is about a month and a half old beard.

This one is Christian Bale's Van Dyke styled beard. Quite patchy, but he pulls it off with the thick mustache and goatie.
Very classy, imho.

It is great to sport, bro. It is not very common to see Asian men, or Filipinos who can grow facial hair, or beards. You being able to grow it is a fact that you have some kind of European/Spanish bloodline. It is a mestizo facial trait.

It is not popular in the East (Asia), but here in the west, women have a thing for bearded men. It adds "umfft" to the maturity look.

Handsome.

How to choose the right beard:

Thin face- You need to grow the beard thick enough to fill the face in. If you have a skinny face the beard needs to fill in the cheeks. If not the beard is going to look awkward, and give you an uneven appearance.

Full face/chubby face- A great beard to wear would be the full, goatee, or long Brad Pitt beard. These styles will help slim the face, hide a double chin, and give your face a longer appearance.

How to do beard styles:

Soul Patch beard- Here you have a small area of hair that is grown beneath the mans lower lip. I consider this an alternative to the goatee. This beard is very easy to achieve and maintain. To prepare for this beard you will need to grow your beard at least 2 weeks worth. The more hair you have the better shape the beard will be in. Shave the beard down until a small area of hair is remaining beneath the lower lip. This style of beard can be worn narrow, extended, or with or without a mustache.

While facial hair is a natural phenomenon for men, it's a part of the body that can be considered an art form in itself. Who would have thought that hair could actually become a way to decorate a man's face? Consider it a free accessory, that can complete your appearance and transform your look from night to day.

There's a fine line between what is considered in and out of style in terms of facial hair. Any style is acceptable as long as it suits a man's face and his personality

1. Au Naturel
-Having a clean-shaven face never goes out of style. This is the cleanest looking style of facial hair you can have -- no facial hair. While it may be annoying to always maintain your clean shave, this style makes for a preppy, classy, fresh look.

Not only does it take a few years off of a man's perceived age (which may not be the preferred style for those who look young to begin with), but his girlfriend will love the fact that she can cuddle up with him and kiss him without feeling like she's cuddling up to a porcupine

2. Boldly Bearded
-Here's the facial hairstyle at the extreme opposite of the clean shave: the full beard. Many men can pull this one off, but don't misunderstand me; I'm not suggesting that you keep a beard that would make you the envy of Biblical characters.

Keep your beard trimmed and neat by using clippers or an electric razor. Just because you don't have the daily task of maintaining a cleanly shaven face, it does not mean you can neglect caring and tending for your beard. You can have fun with a beard by donning a thin beard with a goatee and a thin moustache, by shaving off the top part of the beard and leaving only the bottom part.

1 month growth, thus far, tho I had to trim it as requested by my father. Who believes that I should shave my beard off. Sadly I was disinclined to honor my father's request as it is quite difficult to grow a beard and shape it accordingly. It is the new fashion trend for the facial hair for young adults. It adds character and depth to a man, me-thinks. Quite military-strong, very machisimo bravissimo, ha ha.

1 month thus far:

My colleague joked around, "if you wore a black top hat you would look like Marcelo Del Pilar."
I think not. Marcelo, I must admit, had a beautiful beard. Spanish Mestizo man gud to si Sr. Marcelo Del Pilar.

Trimming Trick:

When dealing with your beard and if some parts are longer than others, to use an automatic trimmer and utilize a comb to clip it off. Evenly.
If the mustache gets too long and protrudes over the lip, clip it off using a thin scissor. Evenly.
Comb the beard daily after washing it. Apply generous amount of after shave around the shaved areas.
Good luck!

The Beard Social Technique:

1. When sitting in a cafe shop, and a beautiful woman sits next to you; gently stroke your lower chinned beard using your pointer and thumb finger in continuous motion. Do this in a reserved and serious manner.

2. Use your peripherals how she will notice you.

3. Continue to ignore her for a bit, as if putting into emphasis that you are not focusing on her.

4. She will either introduce herself to you, or if you are daring, introduce yourself.

5. Women love the beard. It makes a man, a man. The epitome of male testosterone.

And remember, keep it cool. Reserved at all times.

Professional Social Matters:

Nothing looks more strict, regimented, handsome, solid than a man in a black suit, with dress shoes and a cleaned and trimmed beard. Introduce yourself to colleagues with a firm gait, and a firm handshake. Keep your eyes focused on everyone, and when you introduce yourself: --> While your hand gives a FIRM handshake, look directly into the receiver's eyes. Focused on it.

Be firm, be resolute.

Confidence exudes and will give you a professional demeanor so as to impress and easily network with colleagues.

At all times, be reserved.

April 20, 2010 (2 months)

Note: maintaining and keeping and trimming a beard for 2 months duration was quite time consuming. After this picture was taken, it was shaved to start fresh again. This was the longest I had a beard for.

Beard Growing Tip For Men (who can grow one, that is):

1. It is good to allow the core beard grow fully, however, let the edges be trimmed and cut. It adds a clean look to the beard.

2. When growing the mustache, make sure to daily trim the edges. Don't let it grow too long. Okay if it's thick, but don't let it outgrow the lips.

3. Rinse, Lather, and then comb daily (if possible 3+ times daily). Keep it clean.

~~

For those who are growing a beard, don't be startled to notice that your beard hair comes in different colors. When my beard was fully grown, i noticed that i did have large pockets of red, brown and auburn hair. It is common, especially for those who have some kind of Spanish Blood or European Blood. (my great lolo in my maternal side was from Spain--so explains things). I was tempted to actually dye my beard black to keep a solid color scheme, however, grew accustomed to the red, and brown pockets. It is normal.

I have a friend who is Italian and has naturally dark brown hair, he also is growing a beard and has red pockets on his lower chin beard as well. So natural ra man ni.

That said, Grow On!

Alternative Beard Growing Tip:

1. If you find yourself growing  your beard and trim the edges, and trimming the mustache part, and accidentally cut too much, its okay.
(it can be salvaged!)
-I did this one time, and the tip is just to shave off the entire mustache; let it grow again, and at the same time, just keep the rest of your beard trimmed and allow the mustache to catch up. Usually it takes 1-2 weeks for the mustache to grow back, so not too long. :)

2. Be creative! If you want to shave off your mustache and just keep the beard, okay too! Again, don't be afraid of your facial hair.

This is ideal style, actually.
(again, notice how he trims the mustache part, this is a daily regimen, as those who actually grow a beard and maintain it, know how time consuming the mustache aspect is)

This is also something to consider
(the only lower-beard)

Tip on proper way to trim/cut the side burn aspect.

Don't shave the side burns too thin, guys, as it ruins the look. I would suggest also that when you shave it, make sure to have an angled cut as it adds depth. Don't be afraid to let it grow thick (as you can always clean the sides and lower aspect anytime). At first, i was quite hesitant in growing it thick, but it is spectacular to know that women do like it. Again, it depends on the wearer, and on the preference of the grower.

Important Tip:
-When you are cleaning the back part, make sure to do so with a sharp blade and to make sure it is clean.

Important Tip:
-Always, always put on aftershave to bring a soft feeling on the areas that were trimmed. I highly recommend Gucci's Aftershave or Polo Ralph Lauren's Aftershave. Gucci is nice because it has a baby soft effect afterwards. Def. worth it.

Sige, good luck folks!

the new young technocrat look?  my vision isn't 20/20, so my apologies.  the look strikes me more as the morning-after hangover look, a cousin twice removed of the dazed terrorist look.  but in fairness to the boys in the pic who seemed nice until they were labeled for their beards, they could have come straight from middle earth.

but goodness gracious!  where did that picture of a bearded fellow posted by bai hubag go?  it was his post after ms da binsi's, if i remember right.  i hope no one's declaring martial law again, when nothing must get in the way of his personal opinion.

i still insist on my understanding that this forum exists not to massage anybody's ego.

Don't worry we weren't asking for your vision to be 20/20. Just am maintaining this thread as a beard grower's advice to fellow beard growers. Thanks.

No one is stroking any ego, except for our beards. :)

Back to the subject matter.

I do notice that the beard look is coming back into the fold. Perhaps not so much in the Philippines or Asia as it is not popular there, the clean cut look is preferred in Asia-Pacific, i notice.

How to Choose the Right Beard Shape for Your Face

by: Dave Alexander
http://menshair.about.com/od/facialhair/a/beardshapes.htm

Properly trimmed and shaped facial hair can go a long way to enhance desirable facial features or take emphasis off weaknesses. While each face will have its own special considerations such as size of mouth, nose, and jawline, there are some general rules for choosing the right facial hair for your face type. Let's look at each.

The Round Face
When shaping the beard for a round face, go a bit longer at the chin to add length and make the face appear less round. Avoid bushy sideburns and keep the sides of the beard short. In lieu of a full beard, a goatee is often a good option for a round face.

The Long Face
Exactly opposite of the round face, the long face requires a beard which is fuller at the sides and shorter at the chin. The goal here is to add width to the sides and make the face appear less long. Make sure to avoid abrupt changes in length so the shaping is not obvious.

The Square Face
Similar to shaping a beard for a round face, the beard for a square face should be shorter at the sides and longer at the chin to add length to the face. Once again, a goatee is also a good option for men with square faces.

The Large Face
Since the face is large, any small facial hair or beard will appear out of proportion and make the face appear bigger. Keep the beard fuller and the mustache larger. Also follow the rules above for the appropriate face shape.

The Small Face
Small faces require small facial hair. Larger, fuller styles will make the face get lost and appear out of proportion. Also follow the rules above for the appropriate face shape.

The Oval Face
You lucky man! The oval face shape is considered the ideal shape and requires no special shaping to balance facial features. Do whatever you like and you'll look great.

Trimming a beard

Some recommend only having this done professionally. Others won't let anyone else get near their beards with scissors or trimmers.
If you're going to trim your beard yourself, you'll need the right tools. You will have to decide whether to trim using scissors or a beard trimmer.
If you decide to trim primarily with scissors, consider purchasing a pair of professional barber's scissors.
When considering beard trimmers, a rechargeable cordless model might be a good choice.
You should also have a good wide-toothed comb. Optionally, for the mustache, you might want to have a fine-toothed comb. Some specialty stores sell small mustache combs.
A good-sized wall mirror is usually indispensible. You might also benefit from a magnifying mirror and possibly a three-way mirror.
Do not trim a wet beard or mustache. Wet hair is longer. When it dries you may find you've trimmed too much.
If you use a comb and scissors: Comb through the beard and cut the hair on the outside of the comb. It will take some practice to perfect this technique. It is better to err on the side of not cutting enough rather than cutting too much.
To help maintain a balance between the two sides of your face, you may find it useful to start near the ear on one side and trim down to the chin. Then repeat on the other side.
Beard trimmers almost always come with an adjustable and removable trimming guide. By adjusting the position of the trimming guide, you control how closely it will trim your beard. Refer to the instructions supplied with your trimmer for details. Until you've mastered the use of your trimmer, it is best to adjust the guide for a longer beard length setting at first.
To trim your mustache, first comb it straight down. Then use either the beard trimmer or scissors. Start in the middle and trim first towards one side of the mouth, then towards the other. Normally, you should not shave or trim the top of the mustache. It usually looks best if you let it grow all the way up to your nose.
After you've trimmed your beard and mustache, then you should maintain the shape of your beard. Use the beard trimmer with the adjustable trimming guide removed (be careful) to keep the neck line of your beard well-defined. Alternatively, you could carefully shave the lower portion of your neck to maintain the neck line of your beard.
Miscellaneous stray hairs can be removed with a trim razor. Plucking them is not recommended.

Keeping a beard clean

Just like your hair, wash and shampoo your beard regularly. A mild shampoo is easier on your skin.
After shampooing, you may use a conditioner. Be sure to rinse thoroughly. Failure to rinse sufficiently may result in flaking. Because beard hairs are so coarse, conditioners will have less effect on the beard than on the hair on your head. But a conditioner will still help make your beard feel softer.
Gently pat and wipe your beard dry with a towel. Blow drying is not really necessary and can be harsh on your skin.
Comb your beard and mustache with a wide-toothed comb to remove tangles. Optionally, you can finish up by using a brush.

How To Wash and What To Use?

I used to ask myself this until i asked my barber a couple of months ago this exact question in regards to my beard. The trick to growing a beard and keeping it clean is to wash it frequently and diligently, more so like head hair, but the beard is a bit more difficult in that it may grow in different angles. This makes it essential to comb it ad apply conditioner frequently to prevent frizzing etc.

I highly recommend using Garnier Shampoo or Head and Shoulder Brands and apply conditioner generously. Comb and shape it to your liking afterwards.

you might just be surprised if behind the facial veil of my avatar is a great moustache, 20/20 vision or no.

anyway, whoever erased the pic that bai hubag posted in this thread had caused other readers to miss a sample of a great beard, which should have been part of this advice thread by a beard guru.  (fortunately, those interested can go to another thread where it also appears.  i just came across it in 'your last word is mine'.)

by the way, middle eastern men have great beards.  try taking a tip or two from them as well.

p.s. sans the ego, duha ka tipasi maayo i-stroke sa bungot. ;D  kun mokatol, mao pod ang gamiton pag-ibot.

This one has a casual look to it, tho requires the most dedication and care. Trimming is required daily.

The Light Beard Style

Very nice. This one requires growth of the goatie and mustache, with a little growth in the sideburns, and sparing growth on the connection.
The 'cleanest' beard style.

Growth thus far:

Tip: when shaving, make sure to shave off the lower lip hair, as i find it quite itchy if kept. When you do clean the sides , do so softly and layer the beard as it grows. Apply ample amount of after shave to areas that are 'clean cut'. You get this amazing transition from clean baby-soft to beardy. I love it. I hope you guys who are growing beards try this out as it does look good.

2nd Tip: Make sure to trim the excess patches if you can. Keep everything uniform.
