Why does the stomach mucosa have to have such complex surface epithelial cells and cardia region? Why can't the muscularis mucosae of the stomach be as simple as that of the gastroesophageal junction?

Why must it have castric, cardiac and plyloric glands? lol!

When I think I understand a subject, bam! There is more to know, and subsets within a subset's subset!

Ginoo Ko, you are smart and intelligent, pero, Lord, I think you really overdid yourself. No doubt you are supreme and the intelligence of all intelligence, so much so that my own mind is having trouble comprehending some of these tenents that you created when you designed our bodies.

Lord, you are unbelievably intelligent.

You, who organized our bodies, amaze me every day.

I had a hard time sleeping last night.  I called home earlier and Mom told me of some breaking news that happened in Dauis.  A graduate of nursing, beaten with belt by her father for not passing an exam.  Then the girl did the unthinkable; she used the belt to hang herself.  I can't sleep thinking of the torn family.  Such a waste of life.

Haha. I feel you on this one! It's a shame that there isn't enough hours in a day to cram all this educational material in our heads. :(

They bathe us in stress, baptized under fire, the saying goes.

If all physicians went through this kind of stress in medical school proper, then my colleagues and I must bear with it.

For our anatomy exam today, we had to retrieve and produce 12 chapters worth of information. In one exam. 300 questions, given only 2 hours to write.

For Histology, we had 15 chapters worth of information in one exam.

Truly, and I mean this, that the life of a medical student is nothing but study and/or rounds in the hospital.

Tubag Bohol, you are my only outlet. My major outlet. I owe alot of of thanks to Tubag Bohol for allowing me to release my stress, my anxiety. A God-send, truly.

Humbly Yours,

Ma'am Tess,

God Willing, this average student will be able to do alright. Your prayers touch my heart, Ma'am. I really need them, and I really appreciate it.

You are a mother, indeed. Your kids are blessed to have a mommy like you. God Bless all of Us.

Your Friend,

I slept at around 3AM or so cramming at least 4 chapters of Chemistry in my head. I'm feeling pretty good about the retaining all this information, I pray that it is reflected in my test.

and... I'm glad to see and hear everyone getting their fair share of success in life. A couple of my friends are getting their bachelor's degree this semester, my lab professor is finally getting his Master's degree, and someone I know is getting married. Of course, that's not all the blessings that I have seen/heard of lately, but those are the only ones that come up first in my mind.  ;D

We are currently finishing the chapter involving the abdomen and the infrainguinal region, per se the urogenital aspect. We exposed the external and internal obliques to locate the inguinal crest. Then, by basis of rough dissectionary techniques, proceeded to the penis and the scrotal region, to expose the layers of skin and fascia covering the said regions.

In excising the muscles and fascia of the said region, we were able to locate the inguinal artery and the inferior epigastric branch. It is amazing how much blood supply, lymphatic drainage as well as venous plexus are formed and circulated throughout the penis and the scrotum as compared to any other part of the body.

It would even rival the brachial plexus, I submit.

Our body is really fascinating.  Have you heared about the Bodyworlds of Prof Gunther van Hagens?  He dissected different parts of the human body through the process of plastinations.

Several of my friends who are 2nd years are going to proceed into their clinical rotations by coming next semester after they take their 1st Medical Boards. Namely, my good friend Jason, Jasmine, Ryan and others. I was privileged to hang with them this semester, and will miss them--all I can do now is to wish them luck on their Boards.

They will soon walk to receive their White Coats after Final Exams this week.

Colleagues, be stern, be proud, be confident, and be learned.

My congratulations,
A Fellow in Medicine,
Bran Lorenzo
MD1

I absolutely KILLED that lab final. A 50 minute exam, done in 15 minutes, reviewed the answers for 15 minutes for a grand total of 30 minutes! :)

Today's the lecture final for Chem in six hours, I pray that my extra effort in actually making a Molecular Geometry song will aid me in the final. And hopefully I do well on the overall final so I can get a B+

I feel happy to be home for the Holidays, I just found out that a good high school friend of mine is engaged. Already!

Ah, how sweet it is to hear such sweet news.

Just wanted to release that off my chest.

It's so darn weird how time passes. I can still remember walking the reception hall to receive my High School diploma in 2004. And yet it was only a couple of months ago that I received my college diploma from Allegheny College--graduating with High Honors. Now it is so surreal to think that I am already in Med School. Some of my fellows are either in Med School as well, a few in Law School, many of whom are in Graduate school pursing their MA, MS, MBA or their Ph.Ds.

Many still are either working. I just found out from former high school friends that 4 people from our high school batch of 2004 are already engaged, some are already married and some are already parents.

Then I think to myself, "My God, has it been that long? Has 5 years passed so quickly?"

Then I realize that it is so. I realize that my younger brother, Don Rico, is turning 16 this May and is already a sophomore in high school and that within 2 years span, he will be starting his first year of college (undergraduate).

Truly, Truly it is true what scripture states:
For everything there is a season,
And a time for every matter under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
A time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to throw away stones, And a time to gather stones together;
A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to seek, and a time to lose;
A time to keep, and a time to throw away;
A time to tear, and a time to sew;
A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate,
A time for war, and a time for peace.

- Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8

Glory to God in the Highest,
And Peace to His people on Earth.

I miss my family SO much.

My heart aches for my brothers Andre, Don, my Mother and my Father.
It bleeds with sadness to be away from them.

I left for Medical School on the 12th of January. My flight from JFK International Airport left at 8:10 AM. And I arrived in campus by 2PM. To begin my 2nd semester.

I miss my Mom and my Dad so much.

We had a Med Biochem quiz today on Vitamins and related diseases. Already.

I mean classes just started on the 13th, and we were already given a quiz on the 16th? lol
Our Med Biochem professor is so spontaneous--though I do like him. He quizzes us in a different format, but picking our names out of a list and asking us in front of the class a medical question related to the course--either it be clinical features of riboflavinosis, angular stomatitis, glositis, etc, or particular recommended doses for adult male/female for pediatrics or for geriatrics.

Today I was called on to give the clinical features of diseases related to deficiency in Folic Acid. Ning ask siya nako 'some diseases and their presentation' so I gave him a list--particular megaloblastemia, microcystic anemia, sprues, neural tube defects--as well as the specifics of said clinical presentation. I even explained to him the pathways of neural tube defects--and the necessity in the mother's intake of F.A only in the 1st trimester and not in the 2nd or 3rd.

He nodded to my answer and said bluntly, "Good good Lorenzo, just don't lecture when I ask a question. " My reaction nako was a smile--and of course a pink and deep red face. LOL. I was so embarassed.

But after the quiz, he came up to me and nonchalantly said, "Lorenzo, you did well, I just wanted to play with you."

Ako, as usual, played as if it didn't affect me. And parted ways for the weekend.

Dr. Cooper, our professor for the course, is so cynical and yet so spontaneous--and thats one of the reasons why I really like how he teaches. He invigorates me and most of my batchmates. He makes us think--gets us nervous--and plants the seeds of doubt in our assured minds. I like that.

I think I will like this class very much. He reminds me of my Molecular Biology professor back in undergraduate years. LOL!

Haha, ingoon pood to si Prof nako, "its all for laughs". I've never met a professor who found jokes out of quizzes. I think lang that he quizzed us that way to instill a sense of shock. To be called in front of a class of 100 medical students and to be the attention of their ears and eyes for a good 5-10 minutes can be humbling.

Admit ko, I was nervous, and all I could do as a response was smile as my face turned bright red.

I have been awakened in this class.

It's been almost a month and I haven't gotten my laptop back from the "Geek Squad". Although I know how to fix computers, I tried everything that I knew dealing with driver installations, registry values, and device manager but still couldn't figure it out. Hopefully in 3 days they get me a replacement laptop. I'm not used to having no laptop at home and school. I've been on this computer in the library for 3 hours already waiting for my next class.   :'(

You'll do just fine, Bebe, and in no time you will get already your computer.  Just be patient.

I have a special saying regarding difficult moments in life (espeically before taking an exam):

I may have doubts on a particular lesson,
I may not think I know everything that I should know
However, I will give it my all--110%

And if I think I am weak in a subject, Then,
The more I shall put into reading, into writing.
I will force myself to sit in the deepest corners of the library.

I will command myself to isolation to read, read, and read.
Coffee shall be my comfort.

And when all is good and done,
Examination finished.
I shall say in confidence: I did it. I did the best I could have done. And accept the grade to come.

Remember, Inday, when the going gets tough--THEN, the TOUGH get going.
If a lesson punches you because its difficult to understand. THEN, punch it back.
Sometimes learning and understanding a concept will be very hard, I will not deny that. But in the end, you will look back at the end of your semester and declare,"What a Glorious Climb It Was!"

Moments like these are precious moments. It builds character. It proves your Will.

Thank you kuya for your words of inspiration and insight. My chemistry pre-lab assignment was quite a jump from my previous chemistry class. It was about a 6 hour difference in completion, but it is possible. We are all blessed with wonderful friends, family, and professors who believe in us.  ;D
