Speaking Hiligaynon (Ilonggo)
« on: July 02, 2010, 09:39:12 AM »
How similar is the Ilonggo Dialect to Cebuano/Bol-anon?

I can understand for the most part what is said (60-70%) but there are some words that are very different.

For example:

When I like something or find a particular dish delicious, I say "Lami", but my beloved, who is Ilongga, will say "Namit".

Do you guys understand Ilonggo ? Can you speak it ?

I am currently trying to learn the basics of Ilonggo. Pero I would like to buy a book that can guide me; is there a book that teaches the basics of this dialect?

Advanced Thanks.

I dont have formal study, I just know that my tongue got it. When I was young in Mindanao, I was interested to study plus there are so many Ilongos in our town, Even I am in the US now, and I have no Ilongo friend, it is still the same. The way I look at it, if I can speak other dialects, why I cant speak Chinese when that is the language of  my Granny no matter how I worked on it.[/color]

wow! For the most part I could understand what you said, there are some changes in words per say "Sang" (ilonggo) is similar to "Ang" (Cebuano).

When I hear Ilonggos talk they end phrases with "ha" or "han". Cute sounding baya.

Indication of existence is somewhat similar, but there is a difference:

English: I have a dog

Cebuano/Bolanon: Naa koy iro

Ilonggo: May ido ko

~~

There is also an observable difference in interrogative words.

Cebuano/Bolanon: Taga asa man diay ka?

Ilonggo: Taga diin ka?

However, despite the slight difference, it is quite easy for a Cebuano to understand their manner of speech 60-70% of the time. Tho I will concede to the fact that sentence formation is a bit harder for me in regards to Ilonggo. Their manner of tone is also different; their tongue is very light when talking and after almost every statement there is an obervable colloquial "ha".

I tried comparing to the way some Bolanons (Valencianons and Garcia-Hernandez) add the "An" to every statement or phrase.
