I've heard arguments pointing out the non-Christian provenance of the term, and hence its undesirability. That's a lot of bull. The term embraces Christianity--or any other system of belief, for that matter, that acknowledges man's lack of total control of his life and the fragility of his existence here on earth.
My parents didn't teach me to use the word--I don't know whether from an effort to be "modern" or from an excess of faith in an imported religion (couldn't have been due to neglect, because they took care and pride in teaching me to be an upright citizen of the world)--but I am campaigning for its retention in our vocabulary, with the whole weight of tradition it carries as a turtle would its house on its back wherever it goes.
