Title: Bisaya Cebuano Dictionary Written by an American Linguist
Post by: Ligalig-Mike on February 24, 2012, 11:21:55 PM
I'm glad I found this Cebuano-English dictionary written by John Wolff. The entire dictionary, published in 1972, can be viewed online at:

That link contains only the Volume 1 of the dictionary (until letter K). Pangitaon pa nako ang Volume 2.

This dictionary has 25,000 entries.

a jesuit, rodolfo cabonce, s.j., had also written an english-cebuano visayan dictionary.  i don't know if this entire dictionary can be viewed online too.  my understanding is that this is the preferred dictionary by some cebuano visayan writers.  i don't know how true this is, though.  is it, mol?

From the word adtu (adto in modern usage), daghan ang sanga niin:

moadto, niadto, miadto, moadtoay, ningadto, mangadto, nangadto, adtoan, adtohonon, adtohanan, kaadtohon, maadtoan, magadto-adto, nagadto-adto, naadtohan, maadtohan, etc, etc...

ug ang kada usa niana adunay lain-laing kahulogan ug gamit sa pamulong.

islander, cabonce's dictionary can be bought at national bookstore. price estimate: 1,000 pesos. i haven't found an online version of cabonce's dictionary. for now, the copyright belongs to national bookstore. and commercial reason, nbs won't make an online version of this dictionary.

If I remember right, ingon si Dr. Wolff nga sigon sa iyang research, 3 ra ka vowel sounds and gigamit sa atong pinulongan. That he chose "u" for the sound for which we variously use "u" or "o" was obviously a decision dictated by the usage of the Latin alphabet in his native tongue.

Parehas sa "e" ug "i". What is "igit" for me is "eget" for Islander. Of course, hers can only be expected to sound feminine.

;D

two things...

una, wa man tingali mo-research si dr wolff ug 'igit' ug 'eget';

ikaduha, kumusta man imong 'utut', hobag? ;D

(eeekkks.  getting more scatological here, mis amores.  ayaw lang unta iliko sa  eschatological kay mauwaw ta.)

by the way, nganong 'uy' man akong spelling unya ang imo 'oy'?  mas humok kag ilung? ;D

Uups, ayaw pangogat, basen naay mahetabu nga "soft evacuation", har har...

A short journey inside Islander's gut: utut-etut-egut-eget! He he, free variation of a free spirit's fabulous phonemes, eh?
