SAN PEDRO, Laguna – “It’s a miracle that I am still alive. I thought it was already my end,†said Nilo Daygo, one of the survivors of the sunken MV Princess of the Stars, as he was welcomed by his neighbors and relatives at his residence in Barangay San Vicente in San Pedro, Laguna, on June 26, six days after the ship sailed on June 20.
“For about five days that I was floating on the extremely rough seas with other survivors, I did not mind that I was very hungry. I had not eaten food since Friday night because I was rushing to catch up with the boat for Cebu as I was expecting a new job there,†he said.
Daygo still vividly remembered two of his companions who died because of overexcitement.
“When we saw the shore, we were very happy as we thought that we were already safe,†Daygo narrated.
But two of his companions became so overjoyed that they suddenly removed their life jackets. “Unfortunately, a big wave hit our rubber boat, causing it to overturn and in the process threw off the two.â€
The big wave carried the two away from them.
“We did not see one of them anymore, while the other one was fished out by fishermen, unconscious but still breathing. He eventually died, leaving only 28 of us surviving instead of the original 30 passengers of the life boat,†Daygo recalled.
“What happened to us was a great miracle. When we were jumping out from the sinking boat into the darkened sea of ruthless giant waves, I was resigned that it would be the end of my life. But now that I am alive, I would do the best for my family, relatives, friends and my community to be worthy of God’s magnanimous grace,†he said.
