Psalm 37:4 Proper Context
« on: October 03, 2026, 09:27:36 AM »
Psalm 37:4 (KJV) says:

“Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

Meaning

This verse invites us to make God—not success, possessions, or personal wishes—the primary source of our joy and satisfaction.

- “Delight yourself in the LORD” means to find joy in knowing God, trusting Him, worshiping Him, and aligning your life with His character and will.

- “He will give you the desires of your heart” does not mean God promises to grant every selfish wish. As we delight in Him, He reshapes our desires so that they increasingly reflect what is good, wise, and pleasing to Him.
- It can also mean that God lovingly fulfills righteous desires in His timing, even when the process involves waiting.

Context

Psalm 37 contrasts the apparent success of wicked people with the lasting security of those who trust God. The surrounding verses say to:

- trust in the Lord,
- do good,
- commit your way to Him,
- be still and wait patiently.

So verse 4 is not a formula for getting everything we want. It is a promise that a life centered on God leads to deep satisfaction and that He faithfully cares for those who trust Him.

In simple terms

When God becomes your greatest delight, your desires are transformed—and you can trust Him to provide what is truly good, in His wisdom and timing.
