A Kohen (or Kohein, Hebrew כֹּהֵן, 'priest', pl. ×›×•×”× ×™×, Kohanim) is the Hebrew word for priest. Jewish Kohens are traditionally believed to be of direct patrilineal descent from the Biblical Aaron, as are modern Jews bearing the name Kohen, Cohen, Kogen or similar derivations.
The name Kohen is used in the Torah to refer to priests, both Jewish and non-Jewish, as well as the Jewish nation as a whole. During the existence of the Temple in Jerusalem, Kohanim performed specific duties vis-Ã -vis the daily and festival sacrificial offerings.
Today Kohanim retain a lesser though still somewhat distinct status within Judaism and are bound by additional restrictions according to Orthodox Judaism.
