Albert Einstein: His View on Faith and Prayer
« on: December 12, 2007, 02:36:26 PM »
The following is taken from an autobiography written by Albert Einstein.
Please note that Albert Einstein was a Jew, and one who never, in his life, denied the existence of God.
On the contrary, he was a firm believer. He was one of God's Chose people.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A child in the sixth grade in a Sunday School in New York City, with the encouragement of her teacher, wrote to Einstein in Princeton on 19 January I936 asking him whether scientists pray, and if so what they pray for. Einstein replied as follows on 24 January 1936:

I have tried to respond to your question as simply as I could. Here is my answer. Scientific research is based on the idea that everything that takes place is determined by laws of nature, and therefore this holds for the actions of people. For this reason, a research scientist will hardly be inclined to believe that events could be influenced by a prayer, i.e. by a wish addressed to a supernatural Being.

However, it must be admitted that our actual knowledge of these laws is only imperfect and fragmentary, so that, actually, the belief in the existence of basic all-embracing laws in Nature also rests on a sort of faith. All the same this faith has been largely justified so far by the success of scientific research. But, on the other hand, every one who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe — spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble.

Einstein was a giant of a man, and what better a man he was to recognize his own frailties, imperfections, and futility in the face of a Great Spirit.

Even great scientists like Einstein bow before the greater power of the Most High.
Who Is because He wills it so.

Einstein best describes science as 'human reasoning to understand only the fragmentary of the TRUTH'.

Greetings Ms. Blue, thank you for your response. It made me smile :)
If you are interested in reading more about the topic, you can visit this site:
http://www.ctinquiry.org/publications/reflections_volume_1/torrance.htm

++++++

I just wanted to share one excerpt that Einstein revealed (this is provided in the site I gave you) in his later years about religion and his own personal views.

"Although I am a typical loner in daily life, my consciousness of belonging to the invisible community of those who strive for truth, beauty, and justice has preserved me from feeling isolated. The most beautiful and deepest experience a man can have is the sense of the mysterious. It is the underlying principle of religion as well as all serious endeavour in art and science. He who never had this experience seems to me, if not dead, then at least blind. To sense that behind anything that can be experienced there is something that our mind cannot grasp and whose beauty and sublimity reaches us only indirectly and as a feeble reflection, this is religiousness. In this sense I am religious. To me it suffices to wonder at these secrets and to attempt humbly to grasp with my mind a mere image of the lofty structure of all that is there.  "

I don't really dive too much into the personal life of Einstein, as any man or woman has his her own personal problems. But as for rumors and hearsays, I wouldn't take that as fact unless there is some concrete proof.

But I dont completely disagree with your historian friend.

Your post brought me to remember a rather true poem,
It is said that behind every great man stands a woman. Every great man in history had a woman behind him to console him in times of difficulty, to advise him when he can trust noone else, and to encourage him to not give up.

George Washington had Martha behind him in his drive to greatness. Abe Lincoln had Mary Todd standing behind him as he made the historic choice to bring equality to all Americans.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt had Eleanor standing strongly behind him as he brought the country out of the pit of despair into the greatness it soon became.

Do you judge it accurate?

That is the beauty of history, 'te. Through history we can learn the mistakes of the past and yet can learn and achieve inspiration from others through their trials and tribulations: which helps to answer our own questions in the present. You have a very beautiful insight and interest in history and you point things out that I myself never thought of before. About women and their immeasurable contribution.

Tinuud jud what they say about how men get credit for history, yet the silent tribute goes to the woman. It is the woman who bore men in the womb, it was the woman who raised the child who would in turn become great, feared, loved, hailed monarchs, emperors, philosophers, poets, prophets, ministers, soldiers. The cradle of the Human Race rests in the simplicity of woman's womb.

Even the Son of Man, Christ Jesus, himself came out of the Womb of a simple and humble woman. The Virgin Mary.

i have seen some of Albert Einstein's belongings at the Jewish Museum in LA three years ago, ang i learned that he flanked few subjects in high school, he was not the brightest in the class at that time...

i also learned that he was a very humble and unmaterialistic person, (a person whom i knew, personally knew him too in Princeton,) that Albert only have one pair of Salvatori Firragamo shoes, which is his very favorite designer shoes, he wore it every single day til it get rotten then get another pair.

The Human Side of Albert Eisntein...

Modesty, humor, compassion, and wisdom are the traits most evident in these personal papers, most of them never before published, from the Einstein archives. The illustrious physicist wrote as thoughtfully to an Ohio fifth-grader, distressed by her discovery that scientists classify humans as animals, as to a Colorado banker, who asked whether he believed in a personal God. Witty rhymes, and exchange about fine music with Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, and expressions of his devotion to Zionism are but some of the highlights found in this rare, warm enriching book.
