James Dolan, the owner of the Knicks, resigned from his roles on the NBA Board of Governors' advisory/finance committee and media committee several months ago, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Dolan also communicated to the league that he no longer plans to attend Board of Governors meetings.
“Given all that has occurred lately, I have come to the conclusion that the NBA neither needs nor wants my opinion,” Dolan wrote in a July memo to Commissioner Adam Silver and the league’s other 29 team owners, per Wojnarowski.
“My hope is that the Knicks will be treated equally and fairly as all other NBA teams,” Dolan stated. “… As you know, I am very busy with all my duties at MSG family of companies. I need to apply my time where I can be most productive.”
As explained by Wojnarowski, Dolan has become increasingly critical of both NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and the league itself on various issues. Notably, sources indicate dissatisfaction with the league's revenue-sharing system, requiring high-earning teams like the Knicks to share revenues with smaller-market teams.
After resigning from Board of Governors committee positions, Dolan and the Knicks initiated a lawsuit against the Raptors, seeking over $10 million in damages. The lawsuit alleges that a former team employee unlawfully took files to his new position in Toronto. It also accuses Silver of bias due to his friendship with Raptors chairman Larry Tanenbaum, who is also the chairman of the Board of Governors.
Despite Knicks general counsel Jamaal Lesane now representing the team at Board of Governors meetings, Dolan retains his voting power, as per Wojnarowski.
The report highlights that the Knicks have been the sole dissenter in recent unanimous votes. Dolan voted against approving the majority share sale of the Hornets and opposed WNBA expansion to San Francisco.
While the ESPN report may not capture the full scope of behind-the-scenes dynamics, Dolan's recent actions, including dissenting votes and statements claiming the league doesn't want his opinion, suggest a passive-aggressive protest against the NBA, reflecting his dissatisfaction with certain policies. This aligns with Dolan's known reputation for occasional pettiness as a team owner.
